Gamecocks release first 2019 fall depth chart

July 14, 2019

The South Carolina Gamecocks football team and Will Muschamp released an early depth chart on Sunday in its media guide ahead of SEC Media Days.

PLAYERS NOT ON THE LIST AND WHY:

The following players are not listed because they did not go through spring drills because of injuries “and will have to earn their position in fall camp,” according to the media guide: WR OrTre Smith; RBs Rico Dowdle and Lavonte Valentine; Javon Kinlaw and Tyreek Johnson; B/S Daniel Fennell; and LBs TJ Brunson and Rosendo Louis.

 WHAT STANDS OUT:

The newcomers along with JUCO defensive lineman transfer Devontae Davis  participated in spring practice, but only three made the the depth chart QB Ryan Hilinski, linebacker Derek Boykins and offensive lineman Jaylen Nichols.

Two of the eight not listed on the depth chart because of injury but will be starters in the fall are (Kinlaw and Brunson) and two others have an great chance to be starters this fall are (Smith and Dowdle).

Worth noting, Hilinski, he’s listed with Dakereon Joyner as one or the other being the backup QB behind senior Jake Bentley. Will be interesting batter among Gamecocks fans who should be the backup quarterback during the preseason.

Enjoy Fanatics lets hear some chatter!!

A large number of those players not listed in the two-deep, had surgical procedures to fix minor injuries, or had minor injuries themselves (that didn't really require surgery, but rest and treatment), were kept out of spring camp but still expected to be 100% by fall - if not sooner - and are expected to quickly earn their spots back. So this depth chart is kinda like the spring camp depth chart, or post-spring depth chart, that the program often puts out: It's a depth chart of most-likely players who would play if the season started today, but won't be the official depth chart at the start of the season in late August. Veterans such as OrTre, Javon, Rico, and TJ should be expected to be starters by the start of the season.

Still need to fill in several spots, and fall camp will be used for that: more depth at LT behind Hutcherson, and more depth in the secondary from our younger guys, so Horn and Roderick won't have to man two different spots all season long.

But the good thing here is, with the new depth chart, it means football season is getting closer!
