Gamecocks reoffer one of the state’s best

The new USC coaching staff has handed out a bunch of new offers for prospects in the 2022-24 classes in recent weeks, but one of their most important moves in recent days was to reoffer LB Jaylen Sneed (6-3 220) of Hilton Head. The four-star prospect carries a heavy load of offers from coaches-to-coast with Southern Cal, Texas A&M and Notre Dame the most recent new ones.
New Gamecocks defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Clayton White didn’t waste a lot of time getting in touch with Sneed once he got settled in Columbia. He made the call to the 5th ranked outside linebacker in the country and #2 prospect in state and reassured him the original offer from previous linebackers coach Rod Wilson still stands.
“I got a reconfirmed offer because of the new coaching staff,” Sneed said. “They want to get me on Zoom and definitely get me up for a visit when the dead period is over in April.”
White has been the only coach from the Gamecock staff to communicate with Sneed thus far, which works for him since he would be his position coach should he choose USC.
“He’s definitely a good coach so far from what I’ve seen,” Sneed said. “We’ve only talked once so far and we’ve been texting back and forth. We’ve talked about getting on a Zoom so I could meet more of the coaching staff, and do like kind of a virtual visit.”
White said that Zoom meeting is scheduled for Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
While USC has a big recruiting presence with Sneed, he said it’s been the opposite with Clemson thus far.
“I haven’t really been talking to Clemson much,” he said. “They did just lose a linebacker so they are probably regrouping right now.”
Some of his other offers are Iowa State, Duke, Florida, NC State, Indiana, UCF, Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Tennessee, Michigan State, Arkansas, Kentucky, Alabama, Texas, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Oregon, Kansas State, North Carolina and Syracuse.
“I feel like it’s going great just knowing all these big time schools want me and I can play at the next level,” Sneed said. “I never really thought it would come this fast and this far.”
He said along with USC he also hears regularly from Oregon, Oklahoma, Michigan, Notre Dame and Virginia. He does not have a favorite and will name a top five or top ten this summer. He plans to make his commitment between the middle of his senior season and the end.
Sneed only had three games in 2020 due to Covid, so recruiters are basing their judgement off his sophomore season when he had 76 tackles with 18 tackles for loss and 4 sacks.
