Gamecocks see Asante Samuel Jr., offer teammate
December 01, 2017
South Carolina coach Will Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson went by St. Thomas Aquinas High School on Thursday.
The football factory in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is home to 2018 4-star cornerback Asante Samuel Jr., who’s currently committed to Florida State. He plays in the same secondary as Jaden Davis. The 2019 4-star cornerback was offered by the Gamecocks on Thursday.
Samuel, the No. 7 cornerback in the country, could be on the brink of making a change in his status. The Seminoles have lost several 2018 commitments, including 3-star prospect Israel Mukuamu. He’ll see Muschamp and Robinson on Monday, following an official visit to Purdue.
South Carolina hosted Samuel for an official visit earlier this season. Led by Robinson, the Gamecocks are among the primary contenders to land him, assuming there’s a change to his commitment status.
Muschamp and running backs coach Bobby Bentley saw the two 2018 running back commitments on Thursday: 3-star recruits Deshaun Fenwick and Lavonte Valentine. They’re rated by the 247Sports composite as the No. 11 and 12 all-purpose running backs in the Class of 2018, respectively.
