Gamecocks set to hunker down for major recruiting weekend

Nov. 18, 2016

Big weekend on tap

One of the final major recruiting events of the calendar year is Saturday when South Carolina closes 2016 in Williams-Brice Stadium against Western Carolina.

The headliners not named Xavier Thomas are the official visitors: cornerbacks Kaleb Chalmers and Keisean Nixon and defensive tackle William Green.

Chalmers, who began his career at Clemson, is currently enrolled at Northwest Mississippi Junior College. The Greenwood, S.C., native spoke with Phil Kornblut on Thursday.

“It’s an SEC school in one of the Power 5 conferences and they say the best of the best is in the SEC, so it’s a great opportunity to show off my talent, and it’s back home,” Chalmers said of South Carolina. “Coach (Travaris) Robinson said he likes my game. He likes my technique a lot. They just like my game.”

Ole Miss is scheduled to host Chalmers for an official visit next month.

Nixon, a 3-star prospect from Arizona Western College, via Compton, Calif., will get his first look at South Carolina this weekend. He’s never even been to the state. He’ll take an official visit to Missouri later in the month.

An announcement is set for the Dec. 17, which is his mom’s birthday.

Green, a 3-star defensive tackle from Westover High School in Albany, Ga., tweeted that he would be on campus this weekend.

The 6-foot-6, 290-pound prospect is the No. 50-ranked defensive tackle in the class of 2017. Mississippi State is also listed with an offer.

South Carolina’s unofficial guest list for Saturday includes:

  • 2018 DL Stephon Wynn, Anderson, S.C. (offered)
  • 2019 DL Zacch Pickens, Anderson, S.C. (offered)
  • 2017 QB Jay Urich, Piedmont, S.C. (committed)
  • 2017 OL Eric Douglas, Charlotte, N.C. (committed)
  • 2017 OL Summie Carlay, Laurens, S.C. (committed)
  • 2017 DL M.J. Webb, Madison, Ga. (committed)
  • 2018 RB Master Teague III, Murfreesboro, Tenn. (offered)
  • 2018 RB Caleb Johnson, Memphis, Tenn. (offered)
  • 2019 DB Akele Pauling, Columbia, S.C.
  • 2020 RB Rahjai Harris, Duncan, S.C.
Four-star wide receiver commit OrTre Smith (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) will not be on campus Saturday. He’s having the staples removed from his surgically repaired ankle.

Two offers go out

South Carolina had 2018 cornerback Kyler McMichael on campus earlier this month for the Tennessee game. The 4-star cornerback from Greater Atlanta Christian in Norcross, Ga., picked up an offer from the Gamecocks on Thursday.

An offer was also sent out to Palaie Gaoteote, the No. 29 overall-ranked prospect in the Class of 2018. A 4-star outside linebacker from Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, he’s also listed as the top-overall outside linebacker in the country.
