Gamecocks shown a little love in AP Poll release

August 20, 2019

The South Carolina football team isn’t in the AP preseason Top-25, but it is getting some votes. USC’s total of 15 votes ranks 10th in the teams receiving votes category. The Gamecocks also picked up some votes in the preseason coaches poll.

The Gamecocks will face the top three teams in the preseason poll in Clemson, Georgia and Alabama. The AP’s Ralph Russo wrote: “Texas A&M and South Carolina are the first teams to have preseason Nos. 1-3 on their schedules since Missouri in 1975. Other teams to face preseason Nos. 1-3. Northwestern in 1968. Minnesota in 1972. Only Missouri won any of the games.”

Beyond that top three, USC also faces No. 8 Florida and No. 12 Texas A&M. Missouri, which is facing NCAA sanctions, was one spot out of the poll.

The last time South Carolina opened the season ranked was 2014, when it was No. 9. Since then, USC has only once appeared in the AP poll, Week 2 of last season, but made several appearances in the College Football Playoff rankings. They opened last season one spot out of the Top 25.

FULL AP PRESEASON POLL:The Associated Press began its college football poll on Oct. 19, 1936, and it is now the longest-running poll of those that award national titles at the end of the season. The preseason poll was started in 1950. A panel of 62 sports writers and broadcasters from around the country votes on the poll weekly.

South Carolina will play the #1, 2 & 3 ranked teams in the nation this season. Almost time to strap up & prove what we're made of. This should be one interesting ride gentlemen.

Clemson, Alabama and Georgia top the AP preseason Top 25. Unranked South Carolina and No. 12 Texas A&M each play all of the top 3 this season. https://t.co/OPG3psKSpL

I know that preseason rankings mean nothing, but this really proves it.  I know I wear garnet colored glasses, and I don't think this team deserves to be ranked yet.  We need to prove it before the ranking should be awarded.  As much as I hate Clemson, I cannot argue with where they are in the rankings.  However, we played a pretty strong schedule last year, and went 7-6.  How then is Nebraska ranked, when they went 4-8 last year?  How is Michigan State, with the same record as us, ranked 18th?

This is absolutely absurd.  Nebraska has proved nothing yet, but they are ranked.  I know that Frost is building them into a good team, and they should improve over last year, but so will we!

This is just unbelievable.  I hope we prove these "experts" so wrong this year.
