Gamecocks Suffer 63-56 Loss To Stetson

Dec. 30, 2019

Christiaan Jones scored 18 points in his homecoming as Stetson beat a Southeastern Conference school for the first time since 2004 with a 63-56 victory over South Carolina on Monday.

The Gamecocks (8-5) had looked to build off its last outing, a 70-59 win at defending national champion Virginia on Dec. 22. Instead, South Carolina was stung by Jones, a Columbia native who played high school basketball with Gamecock coach Frank Martin's son Brandon before joining the Hatters (6-9). (VIEW ARTICLE)

In the absence of a star/leader on the court, the HC is the surrogate until someone learns from following and rises up.

Frank is hoping a leader will materialize, but it's never going to happen as long as he sits on the sideline moping when the team is not doing what it's supposed to and losing.

This is exactly what the coaches of lesser teams do when they stroll into the CLA and kick us.

It's very noticeable if you have been to as many home games as I have the past several years.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

I am starting to get out of Frank's corner after watching it the last 3 years.

This team is immature and a bit soft.   I don't understand how this team can play so well on the road against UVA and so poorly at home against a team that they are favored to beat by 22?   I also don't understand how bad teams can come to Columbia, SC and play so well against USC.   Boston U and Stetson both played their best games of the year on USC's home floor.    I don't get that.

Maybe its because Frank is watching how badly they are playing and thinking that he has said everything he knows to say and it hasn't worked.     There is something about this team that makes them unmotivated to play a Stetson, or Boston U. at home.     Its much easier to motivate them to play on the road at Clemson or UVA.   If Frank is going to schedule teams like Stetson, he should play the games at their gym.    I think his team would take a road game more seriously.

Folks, this loss can be blamed on two things: 1.) players who should know better trying to go "renegade" and do their own thing in Coach Martin's system, and 2.) Coach Martin's ego.

Point # 1 can be put squarely at the feet of AJ Lawson.  Lawson was a man on a mission, but it was his OWN mission, not the mission of the team.  Frank saw that and benched him because of it.

Point #2 is that Frank Martin was to prideful to put Lawson (and Bolden) back into the lineup when he most needed their expertise and skillsets.  He wanted them to learn their lesson.  He made up his mind that he would take the loss so that the young players would see that the game was theirs for the taking but was squandered because of selfish (and stupid) play.

We've got some players who will be REALLY good - Cousinard and Hannibal and Leveque have the raw tools.  But I said earlier in the year that I didn't want Lawson at the PG position because he was being too selfish with his offense and not playing defensively the way he is capable.  Today was another shining example of the same thing.  Lawson has had sunshine pumped up his rear end the entire time he's been away from the CLA and the practice facilities.  Playing for the Canadian National team made him believe he is going to get big dollars at the next level, and he's now refusing to follow simple coaching instructions.  He saw success with a style of play that allowed him freedom to make his own decisions (I watched a number of the Canadian team's games), and now he thinks he's able to "freelance" when playing for Coach Martin.  Unfortunately, that doesn't work in Frank's system.

Make no mistake... I lay the blame almost entirely at the feet of Coach Frank Martin.  He was simply being stubborn today and waited too long to make the necessary moves with his student-athletes to come back and win the game.  When we pulled back within 2, Coach Martin gave up the opportunity to put in players who could make the shots necessary to win... and that was a conscious, INTENTIONAL decision on his part.

This loss hurts... unless we roll through the SEC schedule and pull off beating Auburn and Tennessee twice, and then split games with Kentucky and LSU (I pick those teams because of where I think they will fall in the SEC pecking order within two weeks of conference play starting).  Unless that happens, and we end up with 12 or 13 wins, we're on the outside looking in again.

UGH... this SUUUUCKS.

I thought the lights finally came on for the team during the FF run and something similar would happen after the UVA win.

Totally agree with your points 1 and 2.

If I were in Frank's position I would let them learn the lesson for just the 1st half and then go the whole 9 yards in the second half to get the win.

That way he's killing the proverbial two birds with one stone.

Pretty disappointed in losing to this Stetson team. Should have never happened. But Carolina always seems to play it's worse  against teams they are favored to beat. The first stat that I looked at after the game? Free throws...……...Stetson 24/36     Carolina 12/24. Don't understand why we have college players who cannot make free throws? That's my rant for today, lol. Happy New Year to everyone and hoping 2020 will be full of Gamecock success. Go Gamecocks!

We lost by 7, but were outscored by 12 on FT.   That really sums up how we lost.   Missed FT is to me the most infuriating thing in basketball.  Good teams make their FT, and bad teams don't.   Simple as that.

It was the 12 more FT attempts because they penetrated and drew contact but we didn't.

That was the thing that stood out to me in the second half from my vantage point.

This is a very young team.   Kotsar is the only player who has at least two full years playing under Martin.   That might help explain why this team is so inconsistent and unpredictable right now.   We have no choice but to be patient and see how they develop.  But its hard.

I see we are going to start selling alcohol at the games now.

This might help deaden the pain of losing to teams that we shouldn't be losing to.
