South Carolina started the 2019-2020 season in proper fashion by routing Alabama State 103-43 Tuesday night in Colonial Life Arena. Freshman Post Aliyah Boston made her announcement to the collegiate game in impressive style, recording a triple-double in her very first game with 12 pts, 12 rebounds, and 10 blocks in just 21 minutes of play (!!!), and threw in 3 steals for good measure. It was the 7th triple-double in program history. It may not be the last.
Six Gamecocks scored double-digits: Zia Cooke and Kiki Herbert-Harrigan led with 13 pts each, Boston with her 12, Harris added 11, and Grissett scored 10 pts. Also joining the dbl-digit scoring train was freshman walk-on Olivia Thompson, who goes 4 for 7 including 2-5 from the 3 pt. line, to score 10 pts in just 7 minutes in the 4th Quarter.
The blowout in itself is not that surprising, really. This season's game was the 3rd contest between the two programs in as many seasons, with USC out-scoring ASU 193-69 in the other two, so this score fits right in. But it was good to see the balance and distribution of scoring throughout the game, much like the exhibition game Friday versus North Georgia.
As well as the defensive intensity: the Gamecocks jumped out to a 43-24 lead in the first half, then turned the volume to "11" on the dial after halftime. They shut Alabama State down, out-scoring them 60-19, even though Alabama State shot with the Gamecocks 33 attempts to 36, and tied them on 2nd-half rebounds with 22 each. Both teams were close on free-throw attempts after halftime as well, with Gamecocks having a slight lead there 19 to 15. But USC shot 22 for 36 (61%) to the Lady Hornets shooting 4-33 (12%). That shooting discrepancy will lose a game for you every time. Overall, the Gamecocks collected 16 blocks and 14 steals, and forced the Lady Hornets into committing 23 turnovers.
The Gamecocks (1-0) now will travel to College Park to face the 4th-ranked Maryland Terrapins this Sunday at 3 pm. We'll get our first glimpse of just how good this Gamecock team can be this season......
