Gamecocks  landed a commitment Saturday afternoon from one of the top prospects in the northeast in 4 star LB Jaishawn Barham (6-3 230) of Baltimore. The Gamecocks beat out Maryland, Oklahoma and Penn State for Barham. USC coach Shane Beamer and Maryland coach Michael Locksley both met with Barham late this week to make their final pitches. And Gamecocks defensive ends coach Mike Peterson also did some of the heavy lifting in recruiting Barham.

“He has a great kind of energy with him,” St. Frances coach Messay Hailemariam said of Peterson regarding how he recruited Barham. “Jaishawn is a hard young man to open up.  I think Jaishawn relates to him very well.  He’s excited about it. What I know of him, he’s looking for a place that he feels comfortable and thriving, a very competitive environment.  I’m sure he wants to contribute to that program as soon as he can.”

Barham took his official visit to USC September 24th. He also made an unofficial visit in June. He also took official visits to his other three finalists. Barham gives the Gamecocks 19 commitments for the 2022 class which actually numbers 20 because of a transfer counting in the class.

South Carolina lands commitment from highest-rated recruit of Shane Beamer era

Barham is the No. 108 player and No. 8 linebacker in the 2022 class, according to the 247Sports Composite, and is the highest-rated player to commit to the Gamecocks since Beamer took over as head coach last year. He chose South Carolina over an offer sheet that included Penn State, Maryland, Oklahoma, Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor, Florida, Florida State, Notre Dame and Texas A&M.
