Gamecocks wrap up junior day

Feb. 26, 2017

The South Carolina football coaches were pulling double duty on Saturday with the start of spring practice and their second junior day of the year.

Two of the headliners were in-state wide receivers Sam Pinckney and Dennis Smith.

Smith, a 3-star from Gaffney High School, is the No. 10 overall prospect from the state of South Carolina.

“It was real good,” he said.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound junior arrived in time for the Gamecocks first practice of the spring.

“Watching the receivers, as well as the coaches work,” he said, when asked what stood out about the trip.

“Seeing how they really go about things helped me get a feel for them.”

Pinckney, a 3-star from Greenwood High School, is the No. 16 overall prospect from the state of South Carolina.

“I had a really good time,” he said.

Florida State offered Pinckney last Saturday, during his visit to Tallahassee for the Seminoles junior day.

Earlier this week, South Carolina gave 2019 defensive end Savion Jackson his first offer. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound prospect from Clayton, N.C. took his first visit to Columbia on Saturday.

“It was great,” Jackson said. “Loved it.”

He added, “Their campus is beautiful and they’re building a lot more.”

During his visit from Elizabeth City, N.C., 2019 athlete J.R. Walker added an offer from South Carolina.

“It means a lot,” Walker said. “(South Carolina) is a great school.”

The 6-foot-2, 192-pound sophomore also has offers from Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State and East Carolina. The Gamecocks offered him as a safety.

South Carolina offered 3-star LaMarius Benson, the No. 61-ranked defensive tackle in the class of 2018. His offers also include Georgia Tech, Maryland and UCF. Benson also plays on the offensive line, so it’s not clear which position he’s been offered to play by the Gamecocks.

Several of the prospects who made it to campus for junior day have shared their reactions on Twitter.
