south-carolina-vs-arkansas.jpgAlthough it isn’t strange for the South Carolina Gamecocks to open their SEC slate as early as Week 2, that Carolina will travel to face the Arkansas Razorbacks is certainly unusual: the two squads, when they do play, usually face off much later in the year. This will be a test right off the bat for Shane Beamer’s crew, as the Hogs are surging under third-year coach Sam Pittman and looking to play spoiler in the always-challenging SEC West.

Arkansas Player to watch out for

While the defense is still a work in progress, the Arkansas rushing attack is firing on all cylinders. Quarterback KJ Jefferson led the Hogs with 664 rushing yards also completing 67% of his passes and tossing 21 touchdowns to just four interceptions and three other Razorbacks joined him with 500-plus-yard rushing efforts, which is enough to give Gamecock fans uncomfortable flashbacks to the Darren McFadden/Felix Jones/Peyton Hillis hydra of several years ago.

The lines were great when they had to be, KJ Jefferson was KJ Jefferson and should be this week, too – he was sharp through the air and ran for 62 yards and a score – and it’ll be all about whether or not Rattler can get the Gamecock O going. If South Carolina plays like it did last week, it will be in for a long day.

South Carolina Gamecocks vs Arkansas Razorbacks Preview and Analysis

South Carolina is entering this game with a 1-0 record overall to start their college football season and they will be playing their 1st road game of the season here. They won against the Georgia State Panthers in their last game at home 35-14. Spencer Rattler started that game at QB and he completed 23/37 passes for 227 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions. Jaheim Bell led the team in rushing with 39 yards on 7 rushing attempts. Jalen Brooks led the team in receiving with 88 yards on 4 receptions. Brad Johnson led the defense in that game with 5 solo tackles and 0 assisted tackles. Marcellas Dial came away with the only interception for them while no one on the defense recorded a sack in that one.

Arkansas is entering this game with a 1-0 record overall to start their college football season and they will be playing their 2nd home game of the season here as they are 1-0 in their home games this year. They won against the Cincinnati Bearcats in their last game at home 31-24. KJ Jefferson started that game at QB and he completed 18/26 passes for 223 yards and 3 touchdowns. Raheim Sanders led the team in rushing with 117 yards on 20 rushing attempts. Trey Knox led the team in receiving with 75 yards and 2 TDs on 6 receptions. Jalen Catalon led the defense in that game with 5 solo tackles and 3 assisted tackles. Drew Sanders and Jordan Domineck both led the defense in sacks with 1 each while Dwight McGlothern came away with the only interception for them in that one.

Prediction preview

Arkansas only came away with a 7-point win over Cincinnati but they were very dominant in that game from start to finish always having a lead in it, and Cincinnati is still a very good program with a great head coach that had something to prove in that game after losing their starting QB from last season, Desmond Ridder, to the NFL. South Carolina also looked good in their home opener last week but they were also playing Georgia State from a much weaker conference which hasn't been a very good road team the past few years either.

Arkansas played a quality team in their first game while South Carolina struggled to pull away early at home against a much weaker team, and now they are going on the road here in a tough place to play against a ranked team. Arkansas has a much better program and they have improved a lot under head coach Sam Pittman, they will be looking to build on last year's great season here in his 3rd year.

South Carolina is only in their 2nd season with their new coach and although they have been getting better, they are still putting things together the question to be answered is will the Gamecocks be able to compete with Arkansas here. With all we just covered here knowing the Hogs will be a tough foe and at this stage a better program overall. I say yes if the Gamecocks can get more of a ground game working, just enough for the Gamecocks to pull off the upset win and some Rattler magic to go along with the ground attack in Hogsville come Saturday.

Most predictions well all predictions pretty much think the Gamecocks will get Mud stomped. We shall see. I think most think because of the offensive showing last week. Granted very poor play but this line can do better than it showed us last week.

I think we'll see better offensive play this week. Hopefully a much better score than my prediction too.

Athlon Sports puts Arkansas on upset watch

On Thursday, Athlon Sports’ J.P. Scott wrote an article in which he looked at teams who are on upset watch in week two.

Here is what Scott said in the article about the game.

“The Razorbacks moved up in the AP poll following their win over Cincinnati last week. That victory looked great on the ticker and resulted in a bump up three spots in the rankings. Anyone who actually watched that game, however, knows that it wasn't anything remotely close to a win over the Cincinnati team that made it to the College Football Playoff last season.

"Now the Razorbacks open SEC play by hosting the South Carolina Gamecocks, who sleepwalked through a win 35-14 win over Georgia State last week. South Carolina will have Oklahoma transfer Spencer Rattler under center. These are the kinds of games he came to the SEC to play. There's no pressure on the visiting Gamecocks.”

Arkansas had 223 passing and 224 rushing in their last game. I'd say that's fairly balanced. They threw to the TE 2x as much as anyone else and he scored twice. Hopefully our LBs play very strong D. We need to muster some running game either by committee or creativity. Rattler needs to eliminate the ints and WRs make plays. 31-27 Gamecocks

1st road game of the year, walking to the stadium Saturday had a very ominous feeling to it for some reason. The team fought through adversity early and pulled out an easy win... This week we play with no jitters from the opening kick and show the nation what we have been doing all summer, GAMECOCKS 42-24

Forget last week.... Utilize more tight end plays, Win the turnover and special teams battle. Make this a coming out party for Rattler and the O line and we win this.

Gamecocks 35
Hogs 24

Be a great start with a big win today over the Razorbacks!
