Date: Saturday, September 24
Game Time: 7:30 ET
Venue: Williams-Brice Stadium, Columbia, SC
How To Watch: ESPNU
Record: South Carolina (1-2), Charlotte (1-3)

BETTING LINE

South Carolina is a 21.5-point favorite over the 49ers, according to VegasInsider’s consensus line.

GAMECOCKS PLAYERS TO WATCH

charlotte-vs-south-carolina.jpgNick Emmanwori, DB,
South Carolina: Emmanwori continues to be a bright spot for the Gamecocks’ defense, as he led the team in tackles against Georgia with 14. He’s also the team’s leading tackler for 2022, so his presence on defense could aid South Carolina against Charlotte.

Jalen Brooks, WR, South Carolina: Brooks is second on the team in yards and receptions, and has multiple catches in every game so far. His ability to find ways to get open gives USC options in an offense that’s still figuring itself out.

49ERS PLAYERS TO WATCH

Chris Reynolds, QB
, Charlotte: Reynolds a career-high threw five touchdowns in Charlotte’s win against Georgia State. He’s been with the 49ers offense since 2018, and has played in all four years of the Healy era.

Grant DuBose, WR, Charlotte: Charlotte’s leader in catches and touchdowns, DuBose presents a legitimate threat to South Carolina. At 6-foot-3, he’s one of the team’s best targets. He finished last week’s game with nine catches for 85 yards and two scores

GAMECOCKS GOING FOR WIN NUMBER 2

South Carolina has played two straight games against teams currently in The Associated Press Top 10, losing both of those by multiple scores. The Gamecocks lost to Arkansas on the road and Georgia at home but will break from SEC play to face the 49ers of Conference USA.

Charlotte has struggled this year, though it did pick up a win against a Georgia State team that gave South Carolina some trouble during week one. Still, the 49ers are just 1-3 overall. Saturday presents an opportunity for the Gamecocks to get back in the win column before playing another out-of-conference opponent, S.C. State, the following weekend.

Charlotte was awful over the first three weeks of the season getting blown out by Florida Atlantic, William & Mary, and Maryland and just when all hope was lost, the team pitched a strong game in a stunning 42-41 road win over Georgia State.

It took over 500 yards of total offense and a massive day from QB Chris Reynolds 401 yards and five scores to get there, but now the O is going again. Reynolds had been out for a few weeks, the attack couldn’t keep up the pace, but now the 49ers have a passing game.

South Carolina vs Charlotte Preditiction

Can South Carolina gear it up after the two rough SEC losses. There’s work to do this week and to tune up more with South Carolina State to follow, and then comes Kentucky and Texas A&M. Rattler is very, very talented. Now the interceptions have to stop, he needs to be more consistent, and the team needs to blow up against someone, just because.

That’s happening against the 49ers. South Carolina 61, Charlotte 17

I am more focused on the offensive output of us and our opponents right now.

If you take away our two blocked punt returns for TDs (and a two-point conversion on one of them) we only beat Georgia State 20-14.

So I am still going with 35-17 Charlotte based on that logic. I will be more than happy to be proven wrong, though.

I believe that success starts at the bottom, no matter what you do for a living.

We should be able to build a large lead against lesser opponents and then sub in guys to maintain and hopefully build a lead.

If we can't develop talent that way, then we just can't develop talent, period.

Doty and a lot of other players on both sides of the ball should get significant PT against Charlotte and SC State.

If that doesn't happen, it will be pretty hard to beat UK or anyone else left on the schedule.
