Gamecock Stats: 2021 Stats

Troy Power on this team is it's defense

No. 1 defense in G5 & No. 4 in FBS. The pass rush is a killer here. The offensive side might be hit-or-miss, but the Trojan defense has been suffocating. It’s allowing fewer than 100 rousing yards per game and 244 overall yards per outing helped by 18 sacks in the four games. South Carolina is having problems putting points on the board. It rolled through Eastern Illinois but scored a total of just 43 over the last three games. The pass protection has been a problem, and the Trojans will take advantage of it. However, defensively, Troy will be one of South Carolina’s more formidable opponents.

Troy offense sound similar to the Gamecocks offense here: The Trojans are coming off a 29-16 loss to conference foe Louisiana-Monroe, a game where they had been favored by bettors to win by 24 points. Troy’s offense struggled to move the ball on the ground, rushing for 67 yards on 23 attempts, and quarterback Taylor Powell threw a late interception returned for a 96-yard touchdown.

The strength of South Carolina is it's defense, has been a plus, mostly against the pass

Gamecock's defense can create Turnovers: Safety Jaylan Foster entered Saturday as the SEC leader with three interceptions through three games, and he added another pick to his 2021 resume against Kentucky. Foster’s interception was just one of three Gamecock turnovers against Kentucky. Two forced fumbles in the second half set up an ailing South Carolina offense with decent field position and a shot to regain momentum against the Wildcats. But those three turnovers didn’t show any results on the scoreboard. Foster’s interception was good for six plays and 37 yards before the Gamecocks punted it away. And again, those two fumble recoveries resulted in two failed attempts to convert on fourth down.

Yeah, the Troy offense can’t get moving well enough. The running game hasn’t done much of anything over the last three games, and that’s against Liberty, who just got punched by Syracuse’s ground attack, Southern Miss, and against ULM. If Troy can’t crank up the run, it’s not doing anything offensively.

Gamecock Offense: Four games into the Shane Beamer Era, one thing has become abundantly and unfortunately: South Carolina is loitering near the bottom of the SEC in most major statistical categories yards per game, rushing/passing yards per game, points per game, you name it and to make matters worse, lowly Vanderbilt is the only team below the Gamecocks'in many of those areas. Thought here, the Gamecocks could have one of the best running back rooms in the country, but the four-man tandem’s production has steadily declined throughout South Carolina’s first four games.

Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield has been clear that he wants to establish one primary running back from the Gamecock group of four and identify another tailback to add in the mix. It would appear that Kevin Harris, who started against Kentucky, is the main rusher who receives the most carries. Freshman Juju McDowell saw the second-most touches against the Wildcats.

Regardless of who’s carrying the ball, the Gamecocks’ overall rushing numbers are falling. See: 47 carries for 254 yards against Eastern Illinois, 39 carries for 100 yards against East Carolina, 34 carries for 96 yards against Georgia and 26 carries for 58 yards against Kentucky.

Trouble on third and fourth down isn’t the only woe for the South Carolina offense. The Gamecocks rarely find themselves in the red zone and arrived there only once in the entire Kentucky game. Taking a glance at the drive chart tells all. The Gamecocks'  first half: Punt (three-and-out), punt after seven plays, punt (three-and-out), turnover on downs, punt after six plays. It resulted in 80 total yards and four first downs through 30 minutes of competition.

Gamecock special teams are special

It’s a good thing to have a good punter if you’re going to be punting after 50% of your offensive drives, like South Carolina did against Kentucky. The Gamecocks can be grateful for Kai Kroeger in this regard. Kroeger’s five punts averaged 42.8 yards per punt. His longest sailed 56 yards and set the Wildcats up all the way on their own 3-yard line. Four of his five punts pinned Kentucky back inside the 20-yard line, and two of his punts went for 50 yards or further.

The tail of two defenses will tell the story on this games outcome

The two defenses will take over. Troy’s D will keep the game from getting out of hand, but the South Carolina running game will be steady enough to get a few points on the board. The Trojan offense will have its chances to take over, but it’ll stall time and again. It’s not going to be pretty, but South Carolina will take a 3-2 start.

I don't know what to think about this one.  Several weeks ago I would have thought it was a slam dunk win.  After hearing about and reading about Troy's defense I'm not nearly as confident.

I'll say (fingers crossed)  SC 20 - Troy 17

May be totally wrong but I'm not buying how good their D is.  If we do not get the running game clicking and come out scoring in the 1st half I'll be disappointed.  And not FG 's.  Not going to panic as CSB says but O line has to step it up.  From here on out it gets much tougher.  Still can't get over the Kentucky 1st half.

If the defensive line gets off its blocks a bit quicker and smoother, Gamecocks should be able to smother Troy’s rushing attack on Saturday evening in WB.

Joyner has been praised all offseason for his leadership abilities and how he’d finally grasped the wide receiver position. Joyner was a former four-star quarterback recruit has recorded 10 catches for 58 yards and notched another 11 yards on five rushes. Satterfield has also gotten creative with Joyner, lining him up in the slot, running him across formations and even installing a subpackage with him at quarterback. The Gamecocks has found largely steady presences in Josh Vann and Jalen Brooks at receiver. If Joyner can find a semblance of more consistency after not recording a single touch  rushing, receiving or otherwise against Kentucky last week, the Gamecocks might be able to flush a pair of lowly offensive performances. The Gamecocks most get Dak some touches.

Got to get more out of Harris. Harris underwent a back procedure late this offseason and it forced him to miss the season opener against Eastern Illinois. OC Marcus Satterfield said Wednesday that Harris’ injury is a difficult one to get over and he’s continuing to get back to full football shape. he has recorded a team-leading 35 carries through three games. His 92 yards and 2.63 yards per carry rate, though, rank fourth on the squad behind ZaQuandre White, Juju McDowell and MarShawn Lloyd who received just one touch against Kentucky last week. The Gamecocks offensive line hasn’t been as consistent as initially predicted over the offseason. Yet for a guy that dominated SEC competition last season, the Gamecocks need more out of their star running back to spark what’s been a struggling offense. Vastly needed improvement here.

Yeah, pretty much this, I think.  It's time to get the running game going.  O-line and RBs have struggled.  I have hopes that this weekend we see big improvements.  If we can establish the run, it will negate their pass rush, which seems to be the key to their defense.

Us being favored by 7 points right now means very little whatsoever.

I expect our defense to continue to play great, but I just don't have much faith in our offense right now.

For whatever the reason, an offense with Doty under center has never produced more than 1 TD in any game he's played in so far.

I just don't see us winning this game if that trend continues and Beamer leaves him under center the whole game.

Hopefully I will be proven very wrong, but I will say it will be Troy by 17 if Doty is left under center the whole game.

This, we have other options.  IF the running game can get going as it should then Doty needs to do his part throwing it.  Sling it out there by God.  If he can't by the second half next man up.  This is an absolute must win and it should be a convincing win.  We need to figure out how to beat UT and Auburn and it starts this weekend.

If Harris is not up to speed put in White, they are similar styles of runners.  How about Amos, we have seen nothing from him this year, still with is?   We have the RB's can we not figure out how to utilize them?   I'm sure we can.

I love Kevin Harris, but last week he looked like he needs more time to get his balance and explosiveness back.  I am now seeing why we saw White so much in the first game.  Harris looked like he struggled with his footing on several plays that could have been longer runs, but tripped up.  I can only assume Lloyd is not back totally from his surgery to form or I would think he would get more carries.  I hope both can round into form as the season moves forward.

Shane is probably very eager to get his first SEC win against the Vols.

I would be very disappointed if he doesn't use this game as a ramp-up for the Vols at Rocky Top the following week.

Find balance in the attack like we did to start the second half last week - Luke HAS to be able to loosen up the box with throws or they will just keep 8+ in there waiting for whoever gets the ball. Fewer mental mistakes; we need to for the first time this year have FEWER penalties than the other team. Keep forcing turnovers on defense and then for the love of all things holy, put points on the board as a result.

Troy is in town and we need to take advantage of this opportunity. Satt said we can correct our issues sooner than later and it's about time we do so. It appears to me our pass blocking is as bad as it was last year and the run blocking is no where near as good as it was last year. I don't have a clue why or what has to be done about it. If our guys can't get a handle on this zone blocking by the 5th game it's not going to happen in the 6th, 7th, or 8th. I'm going to stay optimistic and say we show improvement this week but I'd still like to see better downfield blocking from our receivers and some dump passes. Incremental improvement is all I'm asking for.

Passing game has to loosen up the D.  If not, running will be difficult.  So far, that is what we have seen from teams.  Why respect the pass when we suck at it.

I agree. We need to stretch the field with some downfield action, Vann and Brooks are very capable receivers. Once we establish a passing game our running game should open up nicely.

Gamecocks 31-10

This.  I hope we see a wide open O tomorrow.  Passing, RPO,s, runs.  We have to make a change and open this up.  We shall see.
