Gamecocks pushing Georgia
For 4-star defensive tackle Rashad Cheney, South Carolina has solidified its spot as a challenger to Georgia.
The 2019 prospect from Washington High School in Atlanta has been committed to the Dawgs since February, but he’s taken two visits to see the Gamecocks since then, most recently for the Garnet & Black spring game.
“The way they’re recruiting me is amazing, since I’m committed to Georgia. They still come at me like I’m just an uncommitted kid they’re trying to get up there next year,” Cheney said. “We have a great relationship. They treat me like family up there. That’s definitely my No. 2 school.”
Cheney (6-foot-3, 270 pounds) is close with defensive tackles coach Lance Thompson.
“He’s a great guy. I just like the way he comes at me and keeps it real. That’s one thing I can say. Whatever he says, I can’t do anything but believe him,” Cheney said.
Each time he’s visited, Cheney has received the same message from Muschamp.
“Coach Muschamp, every time I’m up there, he just tells me the same thing. He just tells me he needs people that can get to the quarterback. That’s what they’re missing,” Cheney said. “He’s just telling me that I can be one of those guys to help him.”
The No. 8-ranked defensive tackle in the Class of 2019, per 247Sports composite rankings, is “trying” to visit on Saturday for the SpursUp recruiting event.
“They’re doing a good job of recruiting me now. They will have a good shot at me if they keep recruiting me how they’re recruiting me now,” Cheney said. “I mean, it’s going to be a tough decision by the time I graduate, if they keep recruiting me like that.”
