Georgia pledge lists Gamecocks second; more 2019 prospects offered

March 14, 2017

South Carolina sits second

Rashad Cheney is committed to Georgia, but he’s entertaining his other options. The 2019 defensive end from Atlanta recently told SEC Country reporter Chris Kirschner that South Carolina is right there behind its SEC East rival.

“South Carolina is my No. 2 school because of Lance Thompson,” Cheney said. “We have a great relationship. When I went down there, he treated me like I was a senior on an official visit. He treated me really well. The coaches down there were just treating me so well. It kind of got to me a little bit.”

Alabama is “right behind” South Carolina for the defensive tackle from Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta.

“Everybody has two years to recruit me,” Cheney said.

A return visit to South Carolina has been tentatively planned for this weekend.

More 2019 names revealed

Any time an in-state prospect lands an offer from South Carolina, that tends to get a little more traction than others.

Just after Gaffney (S.C.) High School 2019 cornerback Tyron Hopper announced his offer from the Gamecocks, SEC Country discovered that he wasn’t the only 2019 prospect to receive one on Monday.

Four-star outside linebacker Mikel Jones (Miami, Fla.) and defensive linemen Latrell Jean (Lakeland, Fla.) and Travon Walker (Thomaston, Ga.) also picked up offers from South Carolina.

Jones, who’s the No. 3 outside linebacker in the Class of 2019, camped with the Gamecocks last summer. On Monday night, he spoke over the phone with Muschamp.

“He really liked my film and he really liked me from last summer, when I came by for the camp,” Jones said. “I did pretty well at the camp. I was a freshman then and I’m a sophomore now. He was telling me to gain weight.

“I remember, at the end of the camp, when I took a picture with him, he told me to gain weight and I did. That’s what I did. I got better and I had really good film. He liked my film.”

Jones was 6-foot-2, 205 pounds at the camp. Since then, he said, he’s gained 10-12 pounds.

Clemson, Georgia, Louisville and LSU have offered. Earlier this year, he visited Georgia. On Saturday, LSU will host him.

The rest of the offer spree

South Carolina offered several 2018 prospects on Monday, including two who could potentially profile at running back.

Michael Barrett, who’s rated as a 3-star dual-threat quarterback, told SEC Country on Monday night that he believes his offer was as an athlete.

“(Muschamp) said he could use me at quarterback or running back or even on defense,” Barrett said.

As a junior for Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Ga., Barrett (5-11, 205) threw for 2,753 yards with 27 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. He also rushed for 1,283 yards and 21 touchdowns.

“Not really,” Barrett said, when asked about his preferred position. “I’m just trying to get on the field and play.”

Georgia Tech has offered Barrett as a quarterback. The Yellow Jackets have hosted him for several visits already, including one earlier this year. Florida is scheduled to host him later this month.

The other 2018 South Carolina offers from Monday went to running back Jashaun Corbin (Melbourne, Fla.), inside linebacker Ayodele Adeoye (Saint Louis) and cornerback D.J. Crossen (Greensboro, N.C.).
