Get to know 3-star OT Maxwell Iyama
December 19, 2017
The South Carolina offensive line room was in need of an overhaul, with or without assistant coach Eric Wolford, who is in his second stint with the Gamecocks.
Two starters, Cory Helms and Alan Knott, will be gone in 2018. Another senior, D.J. Park, will be out of eligibility, too. Plus, Zack Bailey, Blake Camper, Dennis Daley, Donell Stanley and Malik Young will be seniors next season.
Wolford needed guys, and he needed them in a hurry. On the eve of the early signing period, he and the Gamecocks have four offensive linemen committed, three of whom are set to sign this week.
At No. 458 overall, according to the 247Sports composite rankings, 3-star tackle Maxwell Iyama, who committed a day after visiting for the spring game in April, is the highest-ranked prospect in the group.
Siegel High School (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) coach Mike Copley recently told Andrew Ramspacher of The State that the 6-foot-6, 300-pound prospect has “really good feet.”
A big guy with good feet, that is certainly a start.
“He’ll do whatever coaches need him to do,” Copley said. “But there’s no question in my mind that he can stay at left tackle and will do a phenomenal job at it.”
Copley added, “He proved to me in 11 months that when he made his mind up that he wanted to do something, he went to work to do it. If he goes into South Carolina with that same mindset, you’re really looking at a special young man.”
According to Rivals, Iyama is a 4-star prospect with a No. 211 overall ranking. Among prospects from the state of Tennessee, he is No. 6. He is also the No. 11 tackle in the Class of 2018.
Profiling at South Carolina
Both of the starting tackles this season – Daley and Bailey – are juniors. Young, who has played left and right tackle, also will be a senior in 2018. It is the same deal with Camper, another rising senior with experience at right tackle.
Though Iyama may not see much, if any, action in 2018, there is plenty of opportunity in 2019 and beyond.
Three-star Wyatt Campbell, another early signing period commitment, could have a future at tackle. Four-star target Dylan Wonnum remains uncommitted, but he would be a potential fit at the position, too.
