Get to know 3-star South Carolina DE Kingsley Enagbare, 4-star QB Dakereon Joyner

December 20, 2017

DE Kingsley Enagbare

Before committing to South Carolina in late July and signing Wednesday, 3-star defensive end Kingsley Enagbare was widely believed to be headed to one of two in-state progams.

Georgia and Georgia Tech were the presumed front-runners for Enagbare, a 6-foot-4, 257-pound prospect out of Hapeville Charter in Atlanta.

“He’s the ‘3’ technique guy,” Hapeville coach Winston Gordon said, during an interview with Jeff Sentell. “That [former Alabama standout] Jonathan Allen-type that everybody is looking for in that 3-4 defense.”

Enagbare’s coach went on to talk about his versatility.

“He can compete at defensive end and the ‘3’ technique in the 4-3. There’s no doubt he can be a ‘3’ at the next level,” Gordon said. “He’ll be that guy who is the big defensive end in a 3-4 set and the ‘3’ in the 4-man front.

“His best football is yet to come. He’s a young player and he’s passionate about the game, and he’s going to give you his 110 percent every time.”

Only one 3-star is ranked higher in the 247Sports composite than Enagbare, who’s listed at No. 368 overall.

Profiling at South Carolina

Three players from the Gamecocks’ rotation up front will be gone after the Outback Bowl. Taylor Stallworth, a tackle, is the only regular starter. Backup end Dante Sawyer and reserve tackle Ulric Jones are also set to exhaust their eligibility on Jan. 1.

Enagbare profiles to be an outside/inside type of guy, similarly to Sawyer, who’s among the top players in the country in forced fumbles (5).

Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp got an up-close, in-person look at Enagbare when he visited for camp earlier this summer.

QB Dakereon Joyner

Four-star quarterback Dakereon Joyner committed to South Carolina last Father’s Day, to honor his late father, Damond Alton Joyner.

Joyner signed with the Gamecocks on Wednesday.

Joyner (6-foot-1, 208 pounds) made his commitment announcement before a gathering of family, friends, teammates and coaches at Fort Dorchester High School in North Charleston, S.C. SEC Country was on hand to cover the event, which was also attended by freshman wide receiver OrTre Smith, another Charleston area native.

During his impressive career at Fort Dorchester, which included a state championship when he was a sophomore in 2015, Joyner passed for over 9,000 yards and rushed for more than 3,400 yards.

His year-by-year stats:

  • Senior (2017): 140 of 207 passing for 2,414 yards and 35 touchdowns; 1,031 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns
  • Junior (2016): 3,642 yards passing, 44 touchdowns; 1,089 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns
  • Sophomore (2015): 3,202 yards passing, 33 touchdowns; 1,058 yards rushing and 19 touchdowns
Freshman (2014): 532 yards passing; 231 yards rushing

The accolades

Earlier this month, Joyner was named Mr. Football for the state of South Carolina. He took home the Gatorade Player of the Year award as a junior.

Joyner played in the Shrine Bowl on Saturday and is committed to participate in the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl in New Orleans.

Between his junior and senior seasons, he competed in the Elite 11.

According to the 247Sports composite, Joyner is ranked as the No. 10 dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2018. Overall, he’s No. 200.

Profiling at South Carolina

Joyner enters a quarterback room at South Carolina that includes three other scholarship players: Jake Bentley, Michael Scarnecchia and Jay Urich.

Bentley, a two-year starter, will be a junior in 2018. It would be Scarnecchia’s final year of eligibility. Urich, a former 3-star recruit from Wren High School, was redshirted in 2017.

Though Joyner is intent on playing quarterback, he’s capable of playing other positions. From this perspective, running back could be a fit.

But make no mistake, Joyner has plenty of tools to excel at his current position. He’ll compete for the No. 2 quarterback job when he enrolls in January.
