Getting to know 2019 commit Kevin Harris
June 05, 2018
Before rolling into the South Carolina football indoor facility on Tuesday morning, the only Kevin Harris on SEC Country’s radar was the 2019 edge defender from Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga.
Much to the surprise of a couple of relatively plugged-in South Carolina recruiting reporters, that Kevin Harris isn’t the only Kevin Harris in the state of Georgia’s 2019 class — yes, there are at least two.
This Kevin Harris, a 5-foot-11, 229-pound running back from Bradwell Institute in Hinesville, Ga., is now committed to South Carolina. That Kevin Harris is committed to Alabama, so it came as quite a surprise when the name was brought up on Tuesday morning inside the Gamecocks’ football practice facility.
That Harris, the one committed to Alabama, visited South Carolina last summer for camp and worked out at the Buck position for assistant coach Mike Peterson. The future member of Nick Saban’s defense rates as a 4-star prospect and is the No. 82-ranked player in his class, according to the 247Sports composite.
This Harris, the one who’s committed to play running back for Bobby Bentley at South Carolina, isn’t listed on the 247Sports composite. He has no stars there and no ranking anywhere. Rivals does list him as a 3-star prospect.
Straight-line speed must have been a concern for other Power 5 schools, because his offer sheet features the service academies and a handful of Southern Conference schools. Apparently, South Carolina’s coaches thought the 4.56 40-yard dash time he put down on Tuesday was good enough.
At his size, that speed is more than serviceable. A 4.56 40 plays in the SEC, even if you’re a biscuit or two short of 229 pounds.
Take a quick look at the junior highlights for South Carolina’s Harris. The size is obvious. And he runs like a load, too. He has a similar size and skill set to the bigger backs — Rico Dowdle, Deshaun Fenwick and Ty’Son Williams — South Carolina has signed under coach Will Muschamp.
While Harris is a powerful runner who probably will be asked to get downhill at South Carolina, his highlights show a guy with light feet, tremendous balance and vision. Plus, when Air Force, Army and Navy come calling, it’s pretty clear that he checks off a lot of boxes that online star counters usually don’t consider.
Oh, by the way, he’s squatted 550 pounds and power-cleaned 350. One would have to assume his bench press max is pretty darn impressive, too.
There’s a lot to like about this Kevin Harris, even if he’s not one of those highly rated guys — like that Kevin Harris or the other prospects ranked inside the state of Georgia’s top 10 in 2019.
