Getting to know the opponent: Stetson

Dec. 28, 2019

After a big upset and a somewhat lengthy break, the Gamecocks are back at home and ready to close out their non-conference slate Monday afternoon.

They'll host Stetson (5-9) at 3 p.m. Monday looking to push their non-conference win total to nine on the season before the start of SEC play.

Perry worries me.  I can see him having a breakout game against us, though even with a stellar performance from him, we're still the better (and winning) team.

The good thing is the staff has had ample time to prepare the team and have them all on the same page. The days of playing 1 game a week are at an end with the SEC schedule starting next week. As to the game I have strong confidence we should do well here. Stetson is shown to be a good rebounding team, but their strength of schedule is really skeptical at this point, so I don't know that they've played against a team as physical and long as our team will be, and a team that is coached as frenetically as ours is to attack the boards. Most likely, they haven't.

Again, the best the author at GamecockCentral can do in the linked article towards praising Stetson, is saying that they are pretty OK or slightly above average in most of their better stats, but this is again being done against a pretty awful level of competition, and Stetson has lost twice as many of those games as they've won. This would be along the lines of an excellent example of an epic "playing down to our opponents' level" trap game for our Gamecocks, and we've had far more of our fair share of those, but I think after our last 2 games, we should come out and win this one handily....

Historically speaking, Frank's teams have read their own press following a big win and choked the next game against a lesser opponent.

So it's about us more than how good Stetson is IMO.

Will probably take half of Monday off and go to the game.  Hopefully we kick the Hatters pretty good.
