Grad transfer big man visiting Gamecocks today.

South Carolina basketball coach Frank Martin and his staff have zeroed in on a transfer big man target. The Gamecocks are currently hosting Tennessee Tech forward Micaiah Henry on campus for an official visit, which began on Monday.

Henry, from Columbia High School in Decatur, Ga., redshirted his first year on campus at Tennessee Tech. Since then, he’s been a three-year contributor and started 30 of the team’s 31 games last season. His other two years on campus, he played in 64 games with six starts.

I don't know whether to get excited about Miciah or not.  He's played well against some heavy hitter competition (against Memphis, he scored 23 points in 31 minutes of play - 8-9, 7-11FT, 13 REB, 2 BLK; against UNC, he had 20 points in 35 minutes of play - 9-14, 2-3 FT, 5 REB, 2 BLK), but he's also shrunk against teams like Michigan State (with 6 points in 28 minutes and only 2 rebounds).

There is potential there, but I'm not certain what to think.  Tennessee Tech played an interesting schedule last year, with Memphis, PC, UNC, Winthrop, Michigan State, and Tennessee as opponents in non-conference work.  He was all over the place in his numbers in those games.  Not all of it was his fault, as he sometimes didn't get much support from his team.  Plus Tennessee Tech finished at 8-23, with a 4-14 conference record, so tells you a lot about what he had to work with.

I'll reserve judgment on this one until I hear more from Coach Martin (assuming Henry is interested and signs).

Not steady play against better competition. Yeah, we have that now. I agree.
