How do you think this combo will work out this season?
I have been a Panthers fan since day one and have seen some good football and endured some really bad football. I do agree I think that is just how he is, but it just seemed like it became more about him than the team to him. I finally had enough when he pulled up to show off on a touchdown against the Falcons and got that concussion just short of the end zone. Football is a rough sport and if you are going to try and show up your opponent you better make sure you are in the endzone before you do. He just never seemed like a leader to me, from his pouting when he played poorly to the look-at-me stuff all the time to his lazy footwork when throwing the ball. At some point you have to be a leader on the field. Maybe this offseason and the lack of interest from teams humbled him a little and gave him something to really motivate him. I have nothing against him personally, from what I saw he was great in the community and did a lot of good. I will be interested to watch and see if he keeps his focus as the season rolls on. Maybe Bellicheck can be what he needs to help him keep his focused on his craft. I just know I suffered through his inconsistency for enough years where I was glad to see him go.Always thought he needed to grow up and quit the antics but that's just him. I'll never forget the SB when he made a business decision not to jump on the fumble. So far this year he has looked pretty good to me though. That final drive Sunday night was impressive, just the final play a bad call at that point. He did make a great throw that went right through JE's hands for the TD to win it. He's improving his accuracy it seems and may get better as they build some chemistry with the receivers. Honestly think they're a top 5-6 team in the NFL right now.
He plays well enough and their might be a bidding war for him in free agency. I do not know if he will be willing to take the team discounts the Tom Brady took multiple times in N.E. so they could continue to pay their linemen and bring in quality players. I do not know if New England would be willing to pay Cam as a top 10 QB at the end of this year. I could be wrong of course. Maybe Cam is at a point where he wants to chase consistency within a well-coached and well-run franchise.Belichick and his staff are well-known for turning around problematic players and re-energizing veterans.
In that sense, they already know how to improve Cam. Brady is the GOAT, but he also had a great team around him and that came from the coaches.
I saw where they only gave Cam a one-year contract and to me that intentionally says he has to make an effort to get better as a QB or be gone for a high draft pick next year. History says he will probably be a better QB than he was at Carolina if he and the coaches get on the same page.
I do think DCs will have adjusted for his tendencies by season's end, though. He will have to run to pass like Russell Wilson does to make it at New England. I think he will improve at New England enough to be retained after this season. He just fits the profile of lesser-known players that Belichick's staff have turned around over the years.
Was that also due to lack of protection from his line and, frankly, his offensive coordinators in Carolina?I have been a Panthers fan since day one and have seen some good football and endured some really bad football. There were years where the line was pretty good, but it did not help with his inability to hit a wide open receiver. There is a reason they went out and got big receivers to compensate for his accuracy issues and I think most of that stemmed from his footwork. In college and early in his early NFL years he was able to out athletic most people. Once he started taking hard hits when running, many time unnecessarily, he had to lean on the passing and he did not seem like he had really ever had to keep his footwork in order. Threw of his backfoot even when not under pressure and sailed a bunch of balls. I will say toward the latter years they could not seem to get a good offensive line, but this also highlighted the fact that he held onto the ball way too long and was slow on reads quite often. I see Bridgewater and how quickly he gets the ball out and realize just how bad it had gotten with Cam. I hope the guy can resurrect his career and will slide more than he lowers his shoulder. I have nothing against him he had just run his course in Carolina and it was time for both parties to move on.Was that also due to lack of protection from his line and, frankly, his offensive coordinators in Carolina?
What do you think of Bridgewater's chances to be successful in Carolina? I hope CM's injury does not keep him out long but at the same time it could be the height of stupidity if he doesn't allow his high ankle sprain to heal fully. There were years where the line was pretty good, but it did not help with his inability to hit a wide open receiver. I like what I see of Bridgewater, but he turned the ball over 3 times Sunday and if he keeps that up...... He is accurate with the ball for the most part. I am not sure how good a deep ball he throws and in the game today I think you really need to stretch the field vertically. So far they seem to be keeping his passes on the shorter side, not sure if that is out of necessity. It is very hard to judge him right now, with the limited practice and no pre-season, but from everything I have heard he really has been spending a lot of time trying to help his offensive teammates get better and showing strong leadership. Davis should be the guy moving forward unless they bring someone else in. He has good hands and that will be key in that offense. I want CMC to get fully healthy, this is year 1 on a rebuild, the team is not going anywhere far this season so no reason to rush him back in, but he is a gamer so he may try to push the issue. I was not expecting a lot this year, the defense actually surprised me Sunday and played much better than the week before, but they still have a lot of work to do. I am really just watching to see the young guys and how they progress. What do you think of Bridgewater's chances to be successful in Carolina? Also will Mike Davis get most of the carries while CM is out? He looked good in the passing game last week from the little I saw.
