Graduate transfer safety from Rice eyes visit to South Carolina

February 08, 2018

South Carolina is among the schools under consideration by Rice graduate transfer safety J.T. Ibe.

Georgia Tech, Indiana and Iowa State have offered Ibe, who’s already visited Iowa State. He’ll travel to Indiana on Friday.

South Carolina coach Will Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson have been in touch with Ibe and “talked about getting me in for a spring practice, to check out the team.”

Ibe, a 6-foot, 200-pound senior will graduate from Rice in May. He enrolled at the school as a 2-star athlete in 2015.

Originally from Mansfield (Tex.) High School, he went on to be a 26-game starter at Rice, where he had 121 tackles and 11 pass breakups over three seasons.

South Carolina is looking for help replacing Chris Lammons and D.J. Smith, both of the starting safeties from last season’s team. Senior Steven Montac is the most experienced member of the Gamecocks returning secondary, which also features second-year players in Jamyest Williams and Keisean Nixon, both of whom have more experience at nickel and cornerback, respectively.

“[Muschamp and Robinson] said they need some experience in the secondary,” Ibe said.

Colorado, Kansas, Texas Tech and Ole Miss have also been in contact with him.
