He was bored at a Gamecocks camp. And that showed USC coaches why they wanted him

When South Carolina football’s coaches get a player in camp, it’s as much about testing attitude and how coachable a player is as it is figuring out a range of physical skills.
But what does it say when a player admits he’s bored with the drill he’s in the midst of dominating? Apparently, it can say something pretty good.
The Gamecocks will soon enough bring in linebacker Jahmar Brown, a three-star recruit out of Florida powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas High School. He has the reputation as a dynamic playmaker who might be a little on the small side.
But that camp performance said something.
“Jahmar Brown was unbelievable when he came to camp,” linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler said. “We’re in one-on-ones against the running backs, and he’s just locking up every running back that’s trying to run a route against him. He’s like, ‘Coach, this is boring. Can we go over there with the wide receivers?’ ”
By any stretch, that’s pretty bold.
“He and I go trotting over,” Hutzler said. “I told T-Rob, ‘Coach, he wants to cover a slot.’ And he lines up and plays man-to-man on a slot receiver.”
That’s a valuable skill to add to a linebacker group that was a bit lacking in play-making and consistency last season. He projects to the weakside/dime position that plays the most in space and in coverage. Hutzler also praised his intelligence.
Last season, Brown rolled up 56 tackles including four sacks and scored three defensive touchdowns as part of a state finalist team in Florida. That included a scoop-and-score TD on national TV.
But he’s also listed at 6-foot, somewhere between 195 and 200 pounds. Hutzler was asked about it, he pointed out Skai Moore came in about about 205.
“Not to make a comparison, but that’s kind of the mold that I think Jahmar can develop into,” Hutzler said. “We’ll put weight on him.”
