Head coach Frank Martin addressed reporters at a preseason news conference Thursday at the Carolina Coliseum

Oct. 07, 2021

Coach Frank Martin met with the media Thursday morning inside the practice facility, and he was blunt about last year’s six-win season…it was the worst coaching job of his career, there was a disconnect between him and the players due to a lack of practice time, and he’s vowed to fix his program with this year’s team which includes nine newcomers between transfers and recruits. The most positive thing I got out of it was the transfers being enthusiastic about watching film, which is what the players did during the 2016-17 season.  Player leadership has been the most important void to be filled since then.  Hopefully we finally have enough of it this year.

Frank looks like he's been in the weight room, whereas last year he had the frail-looking neck of a 70-year-old.

Realistically, last year he was dealing with a difficult knee replacement surgery recovery, Covid, the fear of a NCAA show-cause, and a school president who wanted him gone.

This season, Frank's in much better health, Caslen, the hangman, is gone, and there are no lingering NCAA issues.

We should be okay if the player leadership thing plays out and continues to grow.

I believe the biggest thing will be how the NCAA handles Covid and indoor sporting events this time around.  It was impossible to get a ticket if you were not an ST holder last year.

Wait and see, I guess.
