USC co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach Jon Hoke added a new piece to his warchest Sunday when 3 star DB Isaiah Johnson 6'1" 210lbs decided to join the Gamecocks this summer as a transfer from Kansas. Johnson made his official visit to USC over the weekend with his family and decided to make his commitment to the Gamecocks and will not visit Louisville next weekend. Johnson graduates from Kansas May 17th and will immediately eligible at USC as a graduate student.
Johnson was the Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year in 2013 starting all 12 games and recording 73 tackles with five interceptions. Last year, he had 75 tackles and an interception. He figures to compete for a starting spot at South Carolina and will fill an immediate need on defense.
He will graduate from Kansas in May and report to Columbia in June to begin working out with the team. “I was looking to see where I fit in the most and where was the best opportunity to fit in my game,” Johnson said. “I had to make sure everything was right for me.”
Johnson went from high school to Western Carolina in 2011 and sat out that season with a medical redshirt. He transferred to Iowa Western JC and had eight interceptions in helping lead the team to the national championship. He played the last two seasons at Kansas. He started all 24 games at Kansas and was the Big 12 Newcomer of the year in 2013 when he had 73 tackles and five interceptions. Last season he totaled 75 tackles with one interceptions.
