Henry the latest to join forces with Gamecocks

04/24/13

Six-foot-9 3 star power forward Demetrius Henry of Brandon, Fla., on Wednesday morning announced he will sign with South Carolina, choosing the Gamecocks over Miami.

Henry attends a prep school in Brandon but held his announcement at his former high school, Northeast, in Oakland Park, Fla.

"The next four years I will be attending the University of South Carolina," Henry said from behind a desk on the auditorium stage as he put a USC cap on his head. "I believe in (USC coach) Frank Martin and he believes in me. I feel like it's the best decision for me."

Henry said he actually made up his mind last week after consulting with his mother.

"It's been a long process," he said. "I prayed about it. I made the right decision."

Martin actually recruited Henry when he was at Kansas State and continued to build on the relationship when he came to USC. Henry narrowed his list to USC, Miami and South Florida and took official visits with the Gamecocks and Hurricanes before making his decision.

Henry's mother and sister live in Augusta and the opportunity to be closer to them was a factor in his decision.

Henry averaged 17 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks per game last season. He becomes the seventh pledge for the 2013 recruiting class and eighth new player (transfer Ty Johnson).

Henry is considered a four-star prospect by the 247Composite rating, which combines all rankings. He is ranked No. 100 in the Rivals150 and is the second highest-rated player in the USC class behind signee Sindarius Thornwell (No. 43).
