How Dakereon Joyner chose his All-America game

All-America status
Four-star quarterback Dakereon Joyner will play in the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl next month in New Orleans.
“The Offense-Defense All-American game, they made me a priority,” Joyner said. “I wanted my official invite from Under Armour back two months ago, when they said they were going to give it to me, and they never gave it to me.”
Joyner made it as far as the semifinals of the fan vote before opting out of the competition.
“I felt some kind of way about it, but it’s whatever,” he said. “The Offense-Defense roster was going to be finalized before the vote was going to be up and I didn’t want to mess up my opportunity [by] not winning the vote in the Under Armour game and miss out on both All-American games, so I just went ahead and committed to that game and they made me a priority.”
The voting support received from South Carolina’s fans didn’t go unnoticed.
“I love the Gamecock fans, because they’re the ones that got me on the run that I was at,” Joyner said. “I thank them, I appreciate that, but I’ve got to do what’s best for me.”
Joyner, who will graduate from Fort Dorchester High School (North Charleston, S.C.) in December, is set to join fellow early enrollee Maxwell Iyama (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) on the American Team in the O-D Bowl.
Florida State defensive back commit Israel Mukuamu and Rutgers offensive line commit Raiqwon O’Neal, both of whom considered South Carolina, have been assigned to the O-D Bowl’s National Team.
Recruiting pitch
After Fort Dorchester knocked out Spring Valley and Channing Tindall from the state 5A playoffs, Joyner said the 4-star linebacker was the only 2018 prospect he’s recently recruited to the Gamecocks class.
“I’m trying to keep the guys on board that we’ve got,” Joyner said. “I talk with the early enrollees a lot, because I know we’re going to be moving in Jan. 10, so I stay on those boys.
“I’m just working with the group I’ve got now. I don’t really try to go out and get anybody else. I think that we have all the tools that we need right now. I just want to work with my brothers and win a national championship.”
This weekend
SEC Country sources indicated last week that Tindall had expressed interest in visiting Auburn this weekend for the Iron Bowl against Alabama. On Monday night, Phil Kornblut tweeted that Tindall is set to hit The Plains for the game between the Tigers and Tide.
Four-star offensive tackle Dylan Wonnum (Tucker, Ga.) is also not expected to visit South Carolina on Saturday for the Clemson game. Actually, Wonnum won’t go anywhere this weekend. He’ll be at home because of a high school function.
Georgia Junior Bowl
For the last several years, many of the top prospects from Georgia have competed in the Georgia Junior Bowl, which brings together the top junior prospects from around the state for an all-star game.
Rosters for this year’s game were announced on Monday night.
South Carolina linebacker commit Ahdarrious Gee was added to Team Commitment. He’ll be joined by two teammates from Crisp County High School in Cordele: 4-star athlete Jammie Robinson and 3-star defensive tackle DeAngelo Griffin. Robinson and Griffin also list offers from the Gamecocks.
Three-star defensive Rodricus Fitten, South Carolina’s second 2019 commitment, will play for Team Dedication. He’ll be joined by 4-star cornerback K.J. Wallace, who plays for Will Muschamp’s brother at The Lovett School in Atlanta.
Another Team Commitment selection with a South Carolina offer is 3-star running back Paris Brown, who attends McEachern High School in Powder Springs. Ryan Fitzgerald, a kicker from Colquitt County, does not have an offer from the Gamecocks, but he did visit late last month.
Several former and current Gamecocks have participated in the annual all-star game: Jamyest Williams, M.J. Webb, Trey Derouen, Bryson Allen-Williams, Dante Sawyer, D.J. Smith and Terry Googer.
