How South Carolina’s young vibe is impressing Columbia blue-chip lineman

February 08, 2019

Hammond School defensive Alex Huntley doesn’t plan to make a decision until sometime during his senior season of football. Between now and then, he plans to make some more visits. He has been to South Carolina and Georgia and will be going to a junior day at Oklahoma.

Huntley was at USC last month for their big junior day gathering. He toured the new operations building and liked it all, but one area really caught his attention.

“What really stood out to me was how crazy that weight room was. It was a really nice weight room,” Huntley said. “That’s my home away from home. If I’m not at home, I’m at school or the weight room.”

Huntley, who is from Maryland, said USC’s proximity to his home is a positive for the Gamecocks but it’s not a deal breaker. What’s more important is, as he sees it, the progress the program is making under Will Muschamp.

“100 percent. I think the program is on the rise, no doubt,” Huntley said. “They obviously are close to the top (of his list). They are close to home. First to offer. Great relationship with the coaches. They are high up there.”

Huntley said Oklahoma, Georgia, Tennessee and Stanford are some others he’s thinking strongly about at this point. Along with the junior day visit coming up with Oklahoma, he is planning an official visit with the Sooners in the spring. They no doubt have made an impression on him.

“Indeed,” he said. “I love the youth of their program. Their coach is kind of young. The vibe. I just think it’s a really, really cool, fun program.”

Huntley said he plans to take one or two official visits in the spring.
