How the run game has emerged as key partner in the Gamecocks offense

Oct. 24, 2019

The Gamecocks lost its leading rushing on the first play of this past Saturday’s game, with senior tailback Rico Dowdle leaving with what turned out to be a sprained knee. (VIEW ARTICLE)

The running game has been a bright spot this year. The backs look good and I think a good bit of credit can go to Thomas Brown.  The o-line for the most part has blocked well and that has been fun to see.

The issue with the offense is the passing game and lack of movement we have seen on that side. What's so frustrating to me is we don't seem to have much ability to either take what the defense gives us (forcing plays) or provide a good run/pass mix to keep the defense off balance. We get very predictable in our play calling and we show a play that works and then try that too many other times when it's a predictable set and pre-snap movement that keys into what play is called.

If McClendon can find a better rhythm in his play calling and if Hilinski can gain more experience and learn to audible to mix things up and keep the defense off balance then we will have a much more effective offense. I know this is maybe a simplistic view but it is a philosophy we need to either develop or implement better.
