Illinois punter earns Kai Kroeger Gamecocks offer in camp

USC possesses one of the top punters in the country for the 2019 season in Joseph Charlton. Besides him, there is no other scholarship punter in the program. Saturday, the Gamecocks took a step to resolve that by offering Kai Kroeger (6-3 190) of Lake Forest, IL. Kroeger is rated the #2 punter nationally in the 2020 class by Kohl’s Professional Camps.
Here’s their review of Kroeger from his most recent workout for them:
“Kroeger is also very good at rolling out and hitting punts. He is prototypical size and hits the most consistent spiral in the country. He checks off a lot of boxes with regards to work ethic and composure under pressure. He may be the most game ready player in the 2020 class.”
USC head coach Will Muschamp and special teams coordinator Coleman Hutzler must have seen much of the same in Kroeger in his performance in front of them in camp on Saturday.
“It was an amazing day at camp, lots of great competition and action,” Kroeger said. “Coach Hutzler was with us all day and definitely challenged us in a good way. I feel very good about my performance, although I did not win the punt competition, I had lots of good balls and was hitting directionally very well, as well as hitting great roll out punts. After camp I met with Coach Hutzler and Coach Muschamp and they informed me that I had received a scholarship to play football for the Gamecocks. It was a great day to begin with and that was the cherry on top.”
The Gamecocks are the first to offer Kroeger, so that does give them a leg up on the competition.
“This is my first offer, so that definitely means a lot,” Koreger said. “I have a lot of thinking and talking to do with my parents after this.”
Saturday’s camp visit was Kroeger’s second visit to USC. He also was in unofficially in late March. He also has camped at Penn State and Texas A&M and will camp at Wisconsin Sunday. He’s also taken visits to Penn State, LSU, Iowa, Syracuse, Indiana, Illinois, Louisville and Minnesota.
The left-footed punter does not have a timetable on a decision.
“I am going to talk with my parents and coaches, but I’m just focusing on my improvement and helping my high school program.”
