Injuries Would Take USC Down Scary Path

Jerell Adams limping into the first game of the season is not what South Carolina wanted.
Adams, a 6-foot-6 senior tight end, has NFL measurables but doesn’t have the production to match them yet. The Gamecocks think he could this year, but he won’t do it standing on the sideline, which is where he was for Sunday night’s practice due to a hamstring injury.
Head coach Steve Spurrier believes Adams will be ready for Thursday night’s game against North Carolina, but hamstrings can be a tricky thing to predict. This leads to a larger conversation about South Carolina’s depth chart.
There are lots of places on the roster, tight end being one of them for sure, where it gets scary in a hurry after the front line. The Gamecocks top backups at tight end are freshman walk-on Hayden Hurst, who gave up a minor league baseball career to come back to football, and true freshman Kyle Markway, who has spent at least some time on the scout team in the last week. They might be great players, but that’s a lot to ask of them this season.
Wide receiver, offensive line and the secondary have the same issue – totally untested players waiting just behind the starters (who is some cases aren’t that tested themselves). The takeaway here is this: figure out who the patron saint of football injuries is and give them a few kind words for the next four months.
