Inside scoop on Dax Hollifield, other 2018 targets

November 22, 2017

We are tackling the best question supplied by South Carolina recruiting fans each day. If you’d like to submit one, tweet to Hale McGranahan here.

Welcome to Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017.

@Spatrick04 asks … What’s the inside scoop on Dax Hollifield? Legit shoulder injury or the staff didn’t think they had a chance?

On Saturday, someone from Hollifield’s camp told me that the report on the status of his shoulder wasn’t accurate.

Has the shoulder been injured before? Sure. But is it as serious as what was reported on TheBigSpur? No, at least according to what I was told.

Either way, Hollifield wasn’t going to end up at South Carolina. Whether that was up to him or up to the Gamecocks coaches, I’m not really sure. But that same source also indicated that Hollifield wasn’t going to South Carolina, regardless of the shoulder.

The source also said that Hollifield was told by at least one South Carolina coach that he was “a Stanford guy.”

@DHannum asks … Chances we get a #SpursUp before the game?

As always, I wouldn’t rule anything out. However, I don’t see that happening, unless it’s from someone in the 2019 or 2020 class. Or, I guess, 2021, but let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves.

Rick Sandidge and Dorian Gerald are the only non-committed 2018 targets, according to what I’ve gathered, who will be in town this weekend.

Dylan Wonnum, the 2018 target who’s probably closest to reaching a decision with his recruitment, won’t be taking a visit this weekend. He’s staying home for a high school function.

@TheCockyFowl asks … Will South Carolina not push hard for Divaad Wilson unless they miss on Jaycee Horn and/or Savion Smith? Also, what’s your general feel for Savion’s recruitment?

I suppose that’s possible, but I do not anticipate South Carolina circling back to Wilson, if Horn and/or Smith head elsewhere.

As for Smith, I’m not 100 percent certain. Seems like Alabama is the consensus right now, but there’s not a lot coming out of his camp.

@jamaicanlife04 asks … I’ve been hearing things about Sam Bruce on a preferred walk-on offer, any word on that? I feel he and Shi Smith would be a great duo in the slot and given an added dimension to this offense.

I’m skeptical, but we’ll see. That would be one heck of an addition to a wide receiver corps that’s already going to be pretty darn salty.

That’s among the reasons why I have my doubts. South Carolina has an awful lot of scholarship guys on the books for 2018 and beyond.

@Acosentino98 asks … Is Asante Samuel Jr. still a possible flip?

I’m not sure. It seems to me like he’s pretty firm with his commitment to Florida State. Ask me again in a couple of weeks when we find out if Jimbo Fisher is going to stick around Tallahassee or head elsewhere.
