Clemson has a 38-19 advantage over South Carolina in men's basketball since the Gamecocks left the ACC. South Carolina had 28-15 lead in the series when both were in the ACC, including 11 wins in a row before they left to become independent.
Yes they won because they are better. We are not a tournament team. We also had a ton of players out which I'm sure would have made it a more competitive team but it's hard otherwise to measure progress if we're still losing to our in state 'rival' and they're hardly a bball powerhouse.Fans sure are getting worked up about this Clemson loss. I don't like losing to Clemson either, but here's a little bit of interesting stuff on this "rivalry" as well:
Under Eddie Fogler, the Gamecocks went to the NCAA two years in a row (1997 and 1998). In the 1996-97 season, Fogler's 'Cocks squad won the SEC championship, was 15-1 in league play and 24-8 overall. First round in NCAAs. Guess which team Fogler's squads lost to in both 1997 and 1998 in non-conference play? That's right... the Clemson Tigers. Guess what team Eddie Fogler's Gamecocks never beat? The Clemson Tigers.
Move on to the Dave Odom era - Odom won his first three contests vs. the Tigers, but then went on a 4 game streak of losses (and in '04, the Gamecocks made another NCAA Tourney appearance). These losses to the Tigers extended into the Darrin Horn era (I hate even mentioning that name in our coaching history).
In 2016-17, under Coach Frank Martin, the Gamecocks posted their most successful season EVER... going to the NCAA Tournament Final Four, and coming within inches of advancing in that game. The Gamecocks were 12-6 in conference play, and 26-11 overall. Guess who those Gamecocks lost to in non-conference play (with the game being played in Columbia, to boot)... You guessed it. The Clemson Tigers.
Oh, and I can hear some folks saying "Clemson isn't that great of a team, we should beat them because we had a more talented squad". Did anyone catch the NET rankings pre-game? Clemson sat at 65 (and moved up two spots, post vs. USC). Not too shabby.
I just mention all of the above information to say... look at those Gamecock teams and their successes. NCAA Tournament appearances. AND YET... each season had an "L" next to the vs. Clemson slot.
I'm not saying this year's team can get to the NCAA Tourney (though I do believe that we are capable of such). But what I am saying is that this is ONE LOSS. Flush it and move on. There are much bigger things to worry about this season than a loss to one team (though that team happens to be our in-state rival).
Feel free to beat me up over this post, starting.... now.

We don't know what would have happened against clemson if the four covid players would have played, and if Couisnard had been 100 percent. Very true and good practice. Don't assume anything when it comes to our bball team. But given the record vs the rival, it's a fairly safe bet.We don't know what would have happened against clemson if the four covid players would have played, and if Couisnard had been 100 percent. Had we been full strength, I would have bet a small amount on USC. Betting on basketball is very risky. The proof is the many underdogs who have already won this season.Very true and good practice.
