Israel Mukuamu talks top 4, upcoming decision
July 06, 2017
Only a few weeks remain before 3-star safety Israel Mukuamu announces his commitment between South Carolina, Florida State, Indiana and Oklahoma State.
Mukuamu, who transferred from Berkeley (S.C.) High School to Parkway High School (Bossier City, La.) in the winter, will make the call on July 24. A couple of days earlier, either on July 21 or 22, he’ll return to the South Carolina campus for the first time since the East Carolina game on Sept. 17.
After the move, contact with the Gamecocks fell off, but that changed a few weeks ago when Muschamp initiated contact, to let Mukuamu know he was wanted.
“It really means a lot, because they were the first to offer me and believe in my talents,” Mukuamu said. “For them to reach out to me and say that they really want me, especially coach Muschamp, the head coach, that really means a lot.”
Below, Mukuamu shares details of his interest and the potential roles each finalist would have him play:
Florida State: “I went to camp there [in June] and after camp, Jimbo Fisher brought me into his office and he said that he really loved me and he offered me a scholarship. And, also, they play a lot of DBs. In the game, they might play seven DBs, and their DBs are tall and big, just like me, so that’s one of the main reasons why I put them in my top 4.”
Indiana: “They reached out to me in March, and ever since, they’ve been hard on me. Coach [Tom] Allen, the head coach, he talks to me almost every day, so has coach [Noah] Joseph, the safeties coach. I’m a priority for them, so that really means a lot to me.”
Oklahoma State: “I’ve been talking to them since I moved to Louisiana. Actually, coach [Dan] Hammerschmidt, the safeties coach, we have a strong relationship. He likes me a lot. They have a safety there right now named Tre Flowers that’s going to be a senior and he wants me to come in and play his role, because he’s long and big like me. He’s about 6-3, 200, so he wants me to play that strong safety position.”
South Carolina: “We haven’t talked much about that yet. [Muschamp] just said that he wants me. When I was at the camp last summer, they told me they just wanted me as a DB. I can impact them either playing corner or safety.”
According to the 247Sports composite, Mukuamu is ranked as the No. 40 safety in the Class of 2018.
