One of UGA’s top commitments at defensive back has set up his official visits to other schools.
Two of them are UGA’s biggest SEC East rivals.
Shaq Wiggins, who has been pledged to UGA for nearly a year, will take recruiting trips to UGA next weekend, South Carolina on Jan. 11, Florida on Jan. 18, and Ole Miss on Jan. 25.
“Decision time is coming and things are getting REAL,” Wiggins said in a text message to the AJC.
When asked about the status of his UGA commitment, Wiggins replied, “Still committed.”
The 5-foot-9, 160-pounder is a little smaller than the cornerbacks that UGA defensive coordinator Todd Grantham traditionally recruits. However, Wiggins makes up for it with his athleticism and aggressive style of play. Wiggins is ranked as the nation’s No. 87 overall prospect by ESPN.
“I think this whole thing about size is a little overrated,” Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker said. “If they can cover, they can cover. Shaq can cover.”
The recruiting journey of Wiggins will be interesting to watch: He is close friends with WR Ja’Quay Williams, who is also considering UGA and South Carolina, among others. Williams signed with Auburn last year out of Sandy Creek but did not qualify. He is spending this year at prep school and plans to enroll at a four-year college in January. Ja’Quay de-committed from Auburn last Sunday.
Another Sandy Creek standout, junior WR Demarre Kitt, recently de-committed from UGA but says he is still considering the Bulldogs, along with Clemson and USC, among others. OL Alan Knott, a Sandy Creek senior, is committed to South Carolina, with rumors that he may pursued by UGA if the Bulldogs miss on high-profile OL targets such as Laremy Tunsil and Tyrone Crowder.
UGA has 30 commits for its 2013 recruiting, including at least two others who are projected to play cornerback. Last week, Kell High School’s Brendan Langley switched his commitment from South Carolina to UGA.
