It is almost impossible for a defensive player to win the Heisman trophy. That honor usually ends up going to an offensive player who put up gaudy stats and/or played for a team that was in contention for a national title.

USC defensive end Jadeveon Clowney wants to buck that trend. He hasn’t been shy about his desire to at least earn an invite to the Heisman awards ceremony in December. For this to happen Clowney figures he will have to excel in almost all of the key defensive categories in the SEC.

“I think I need to lead the SEC in tackles for a loss, forced fumbled and sacks and just make a lot of plays out there, a lot of key plays in big games,” Clowney said. “I think that will have a lot of leeway on who wins.”

When Charles Woodson won it as a defensive back at Michigan he branched out and played some offense and special teams. That’s not something Clowney is going to do this season.

“No interest at all in playing offense,” Clowney said.” Forget it.”

Take a listen to the audio below to get Clowney’s thoughts on some of his defensive teammates and the offensive lineman he thinks is the best on the Gamecock team.
