Jake Bentley will be among 25 Gamecocks set to walk for South Carolina’s senior day

Nov. 05, 2019

QB Jake Bentley will face a choice at the end of the season: Go elsewhere as a graduate transfer, return to compete with Ryan Hilinski or takes his chances in the NFL. But before that, Bentley is getting his Carolina degree and he will be walking on senior day Saturday before the game against Appalachian State.

The Gamecocks confirmed that Tuesday. Bentley has not played since the season opener when he suffered a foot injury on the final play. Bentley is fourth on the school’s all-time passing yardage list and third in all-time touchdowns.

Walking on senior day is sometimes a sign a player with eligibility left is moving on, but that’s not always the case. Also  Saturday’s senior day list are two redshirt juniors — tight end Kyle Markway and offensive lineman Sadarius Hutcherson.

THE REST

The 25 players expected to take part in Senior Day festivities include Michael Almond, Jake Bentley, T.J. Brunson, Joseph Charlton, Chavis Dawkins, Mon Denson, Rico Dowdle, Bryan Edwards, Daniel Fennell, Tavien Feaster, Jaylan Foster, Bailey Hart, Sadarius Hutcherson, J.T. Ibe, Javon Kinlaw, Caleb Kinlaw, Kyle Markway, Matt Oliveira, Kiel Pollard, Kobe Smith, Donell Stanley, Will Tommie, A.J. Turner, Eldridge Thompson and D.J. Wonnum.

Always a sad day to see these guys out there for their last game. We'll miss everyone of them. Go Gamecocks!

So that would be a tacit acknowledgement that he won't be returning to the team... Sad, but not unexpected. I wish him well and thank him for his time and effort.

I was in the endzone when he tossed the TD to Bryan Edwards vs Michigan a couple of years ago. That was heroic team effort to dominate the 4th quarter and pull out the W!

I blamed Jake exclusively for the UNC loss.  Finally got up the nerve to go back and watch that game in it’s entirety this week.  I was wrong.  We lost that game because of wretched offensive line play and penalties.  Jake was good through 3 quarters, he panicked in the 4th because he was hearing footsteps (a lot of times for good reason).

It was odd having watched Ryan as our QB for the last 8 games and then going back and watching Jake.  The first thing that stood out was how well jake moved in the pocket.  I had forgotten that.  He had a real nack for escaping trouble and creating plays too.  Ryan has to improve greatly in that area for sure.

I think losing Jake was a bigger blow than we realized.  Ryan is doing well as a freshman but there’s something about having a senior qb on the field with 30+ starts under his belt.  If he could just cut down on all the wtf interceptions I think he could’ve had a good year and possibly had us one or two games better than 4-5 right now.  At any rate I hope he comes back next year.

At any rate I hope he comes back next year.
I DO TOO. I know our current OC may not be the right coach for it, but I have seen teams rotate between 2 QB's intentionally. Could you imagine if you had to prepare to play against the Gamecocks and have to get your defense ready to face 3 different QB's?

I really think Jake still has plenty of good playing time he could bring and if he only had to play half the plays, he might be an even better passer. Him and Joyner both bring the risk of a run, and he is really pretty good at breaking for a first down when he doesn't have open receivers. I really hated the INT's, but I really think Jake is a pretty good QB. Right now he is not really NFL material, but let him get in some really good playing time, and who knows.

Another thing, Maybe Ryan and Doty could go ahead and get their RS season in and let Joyner back up Jake. Then the next year you got Ryan, Joyner, and Doty. Boy what a group of QB's that could be. I know we got Wyman and Stewart committed.

Maybe Champ needs to go find some more WR's to complement these good QB's he is grooming. Think about it, you got Shi coming on strong, but who is the next Edwards? Got plenty with some playing time.
