During an interview session last week, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier fielded a question about “Shaw’s progress.” Spurrier launched into a breakdown of walk-on cornerback Jared Shaw until the questioner clarified that he meant starting quarterback Connor Shaw.
“Well Jared Shaw is making more plays than Connor right now, so I thought that’s who you were talking about,” Spurrier said. “Jared picked off another one and went the distance. He has a knack for breaking on the ball and watching the quarterback, so he does a good job back there.”
No Gamecock has had a more surprising spring than Jared Shaw, a senior from Fort Mill who started his career at Newberry College. He has two interceptions for touchdowns during scrimmage situations and probably will get plenty of chances Saturday in the Garnet and Black game, the final workout of spring practice.
“Jared is getting better,” defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward said. “He’s the kind of guy that has to do the little things right all the time to be successful. When he does, he will have a chance. If he keeps improving, I definitely won’t have any problem putting him in the ball game because he’s shown he can play.”[/indent]
“He’s been pretty productive,” [secondary coach Grady] Brown said. “If he continues to make plays the way he is right now, I can’t see why there wouldn’t be a place for him in our secondary.”
Spurrier, though, thinks it’s more than that.
“He’s going to get every chance,” Spurrier said. “He’s competing for a starting defensive back job now.”
Even Shaw knows that’s a long shot. The 5-foot-10, 179-pounder, who played in 2010 but then left the team before the season last year only to return this spring, hopes to make the kickoff coverage team in the fall, he said. Shaw also has blocked a punt this spring. (“Haven’t seen a play like that since I coached here,” Spurrier said.)
yes it’s spring practice which is much different than games but still sounds very interesting. could very well be a name to look out for this season. if someone is a heads-up, smart player, there’s no telling what he can do-esp a player that can make athletic plays.
