Jeremiah Moon stands tall among Gamecocks’ linebacker targets

July 13, 2015

Jeremiah Moon stood out among the linebackers who participated in last month’s Gamecock Showcase camp.

He would also stand out if he ultimately decides to commit to South Carolina.

“I checked their roster,” Moon said. “If I was to go there I would be one of the taller ones there.”

At 6-foot-4, 208 pounds, the four-star prospect from Hoover High is two inches taller than any linebacker on USC’s roster. Junior standout Skai Moore, for example, is 6-foot-2, and USC’s other targets at the position range from 6-foot to 6-foot-3.

Moon’s frame is something that gives some colleges pause.

“A lot of coaches say, ‘Don’t worry about it, we’ll take care of it,’ ” he said. “Some schools, before they offer, they’re waiting for my body to develop.”

The Gamecocks are not waiting. USC and linebackers coach Kirk Botkin continue to make Moon a priority for the Class of 2016. There is also a bond at USC with Grady Brown, who showed Moon around campus on his first visit to USC.

Botkin is in touch with Moon regularly, reaching out to him as recently as Monday morning.

“He thinks I will grow into my body and that I’ll fit into his system. I think he thinks highly of me,” Moon said. “My frame will fill out. I just know it will.”

Hoover High has won three straight state titles, with Moon a big part of that success. Rivals’ Andrew Bone earlier this month ranked the linebacker No. 15 among the state of Alabama’s top 50 prospects.

“Moon has seen significant action for the Bucs the last two seasons. He had double-digit tackles in the 2014 state title game,” Bone wrote. “Moon has excellent length and a wide wing span. He plays in a great system and is a leader on the field.”

Moon is moving forward in recruiting with a top group of USC, Mississippi State and Florida, in no order. He also keeps in touch with Minnesota.

He visited Gainesville last month after the Gamecock Showcase. Moon was offered by the Gators after camping there. He has a connection at Florida in defensive coordinator Geoff Collins, who offered Moon when Collins was at Mississippi State.

Moon doesn’t have a leader and said of his current top group:

▪ USC: “They always send me letters and always check up on me. I like that feeling. They think highly of me.”

▪ Florida: “Their campus is amazing. It’s definitely a college down. It’s beautiful down there.”

▪ Mississippi State: “Every time I go there they show me much love. I know players there that were in the Birmingham system. I’ve always been around there and been able to travel there. I like the feeling I get when I go down there.”

Moon was invited to USC’s upcoming pool party get-together for recruits but is not sure if he will make it. He’s at the point in the summer where free time is in short supply and his family might opt for a vacation over a recruiting trip.

Moon goes back and forth between making a decision “sooner than later” and waiting until sometime during the season.

“I’m not sure, to be honest,” he said of a timetable. “It will happen when it’s right in my heart and I’ve talked about it with my family and my coaches. I know spots are filling up for all the schools. I don’t want to be left off a roster.”
