OL Jerome Carvin talks Gamecocks offer

Feb. 11, 2017

3-star OT hopes to visit for spring game

Jerome Carvin was among the host of 2018 prospects to land an offer from South Carolina earlier this week.

Gamecocks running back coach Bobby Bentley passed along the word earlier this week.

“Coach Bentley called my head coach earlier this week and he talked to me and he offered me, but I didn’t know that he (offered) until he texted me (Wednesday),” Carvin said.

Offensive line coach Eric Wolford is in contact with Carvin on a daily basis.

“He talks to me about where I would fit on the O-line at South Carolina and he tells me what I need to train on,” Carvin said.

South Carolina hasn’t persuaded him to make it to campus yet, but Carvin hopes to visit on April 1 for the spring game. Bentley and Wolford plan to visit him at Cordova (Tenn.) High School during the spring evaluation period.

Tennessee also offered on Wednesday.

“It means a lot for the home state to offer me today; I never really talked to them before signing day,” Carvin said, “But now I talk to them on a daily basis.”

The No. 66-ranked offensive tackle in the Class of 2018 also has offers from Louisville, Missouri and Mississippi State.

Several factors will be considered as Carvin (6-5, 310) works toward a decision.

“Academics, how I fit in the system, my development as a offensive lineman, great strength and conditioning … playing time,” he said.

Frank’s kid

Brandon Martin, the son of South Carolina basketball coach Frank Martin, has an opportunity to join the Gamecocks basketball team as a walk-on.

That’s according to John Whittle of TheBigSpur.

“I go to his practice all the time and I know what he expects from his players,” Brandon said. “He doesn’t get mad at shots or turnovers; he just wants them to be in the right place and play hard. There’s a definite possibility I can go to South Carolina.”

Several other programs are in contact with him, including Presbyterian, Wofford and Southeast Louisiana.

Out-of-state favorite

Saluda (S.C.) High School 3-star Kelijiha Brown, who visited Wake Forest earlier this month, told Phil Kornblut that he slightly favors the Demon Deacons.

South Carolina and East Carolina have also offered.

“I don’t know how to put it, they are all right there,” Brown said. “It’s like Wake Forest is a 51 and South Carolina is a 50. Virginia Tech is a 45. What I like about Wake Forest is they make me feel like I’m honored there.

“They showed me major love; they made me feel wanted, and that means a lot coming from a small town. I want to go somewhere where I’m wanted and I feel like they want me there. It’s a good school surrounded by good people and a good campus. It’s not big, but it’s not small either.”

The Gamecocks will host him on Feb. 25 for junior day.
