DB JJ Givens of Mechanicsville, VA committed to USC at the Showcase camp in late June. Since then he’s picked up more offers including one from Clemson. Penn State and Ole Miss also are recent offers. But Givens is coming back to USC Friday for the pool party and for Saturday’s camp and says his commitment to the Gamecocks is as strong as when he made it calling it 100%.
“It (Clemson offer) hasn’t really altered my recruiting at all,” Givens said. ‘I’m still 100% South Carolina right now. It hasn’t affected my commitment at all. Clemson is a good school, don’t get me wrong. But I’m committed right now. I’m loyal to my team. I”m still kind of early in the recruiting process and I’m committed. I do know South Carolina, as of right now, is the place I really want to be. I’m still solid to them and I can’t wait to be on campus tomorrow.”
Givens actually talked with Steve Spurrier Thursday, one day after Spurrier’s diatribe toward those questioning his coaching future because of his age. Givens said he’s not surprised Spurrier forcefully attempted to clear the air.
“He’s serious about what he does and South Carolina has a lot of expectations this year to live up to,” he said. “Coach Spurrier is a legend coach and he had a lot of points in what he said.”
As for Clemson, Givens has been in contact with defensive coordinator Brent Venables.
“Mainly what they have been telling me is I fit like the perfect scheme for Clemson,” Givens said. “They can definitely see me being an impact right away. But that’s recruiting. It’s a great offer. I feel blessed and privileged to get an offer from a great university like that, but as I said, I am committed. South Carolina is my home. I have nothing but the utmost respect for Clemson, but at the moment I just want to get to know my future teammates better, learn the system better and be prepared to arrive in Columbia next year.”
Givens said he does have two other official visits planned besides USC because before he committed to the Gamecocks he promised the coaching staffs at Ole Miss and Arizona State he would visit.
“I feel as though as a man and as a person I have to stay true to my word, so I will be taking an official visit to Arizona State September 26th and I have not yet scheduled the Ole Miss one,” Givens said. “And of course, I’m taking the visit to South Carolina and I do believe my official visit to South Carolina will be the game against Florida.”
Givens said he hasn’t decided if he he will take an official visit to Clemson.
Givens will be joined on his Friday visits by his stepdad and teammate 2017 WR Clay Naff, a prospect USC is interested in. Naff also participated in the Showcase camp in June.
