DE Brad Johnson of Pendleton has seen Michigan State and Tennessee come on board with offers this week and Michigan may not be far behind. Recruiter Jay Harbaugh was by the school this week.
“He can not offer but he gave me every indication that we would have an offer very soon,” said Pendleton coach Paul Sutherland. “He spent about an hour and a half hour with me. Ability wise he said he’s ready to offer. They want to check character and grades and all that and everything he heard he liked.”
Clemson recruiter Brent Venables was by the school last Friday but the Tigers have not yet offered. USC has taken the opposite approach with Johnson. The Gamecocks have offered and have expressed to him thru his coach and directly how much he’s wanted in the program.
“They were here Tuesday and watched practice, Coach Hutzler and Coach Peterson,” Sutherland said. “They watched the entire practice. They are constant, constant. They’ll be in it to the end. Whether they’ll get him or not I don’t know but they’ll be in it till the end. and I don’t think it will be an early decision. He’s going to take official visits. But they’ve worked hard and have a great relationship with him.”
As for out of state interest, Sutherland said Virginia Tech and Notre Dame are showing the strongest interest. He added that Tennessee is coming to check out Johnson on Thursday.
Sutherland, Johnson and Johnson’s mother got together Wednesday night to begin mapping out visit plans for this summer. Sutherland said Johnson wants to see as many schools that he’s strongly interested in that he’s yet to visit.
“He wants to see the Big 10 schools and Texas A&M,” the coach said. “And Notre Dame is Big 10 to us. We’re going to try to make that run sometime this summer. He’s got a plan together. The only variable out there now is Michigan. He said we’ll be hearing back from him. But right now it looks like he’s going to be on campus at Notre Dame, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Texas A&M, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Virginia Tech. By the end of the summer he knows we’ve got to get it narrowed down to a small number. He knows that.”
Johnson has visited USC, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest.
