Josh Vann has competition in recruitment of Dylan Wonnum

August 30, 2017

South Carolina recruiting pitch

For the Gamecocks, 4-star offensive tackle Dylan Wonnum is one of the few remaining targets from that side of the ball.

Though South Carolina was once perceived as the team to beat, there’s a new leader for Wonnum, a 2018 prospect from Tucker (Ga.) High School: Auburn.

Wonnum still is a couple of months away from reaching a decision, so there’s plenty of time for South Carolina to shift back into the top spot. And there’s plenty of time for his teammate, 4-star wide receiver Josh Vann, to convince him to join the Gamecocks’ 2018 class.

“I’m trying to get Dylan down there,” Vann told Ben Wolk of SEC Country. “But Michael will probably be like that, too. It happens. It’s his decision, so we’ll see.”

Michael is 4-star linebacker Michael Harris, Vann and Wonnum’s classmate at Tucker who’s been committed to Auburn since late July. Vann committed to South Carolina earlier this month.

“I think I’ll hear from both,” Wonnum said. “They like to go back and forth.”

Harris, like Vann and Wonnum, is a 4-star recruit.

“Josh, man, I don’t know. I know he’ll try to convince Dylan to give him someone on the offensive side to help block to get him the ball,” Harris said.

He added, “It’s going to be a great battle trying to convince Dylan and see where his head’s at, because Dylan’s hard to get answers out of, to be honest.”

No official, no problem

South Carolina fans shouldn’t freak out if 4-star defensive tackle Rick Sandidge doesn’t take an official visit to Columbia.

Earlier this week, the 2018 prospect from Concord (N.C.) High School told Phil Kornblut that he’s thinking about other destinations, because South Carolina is “right there.”

“That really won’t affect my decision,” Sandidge said. “Just because I don’t choose South Carolina for an official, that doesn’t affect their chances at all. I live less than 2 hours away.”

Sandidge plans to take one to Michigan for the Ohio State game in November. He’s also considering official stops at Florida, Penn State and Louisville.
