The spring evaluation period has been an interesting time for three-star defensive tackle/offensive lineman Jozie Milton 6'3" 294lbs as there have been well more than 30 schools that have had coaches stop by Clinton (La.) Silliman Institute.

It looks like it could get a lot more interesting this week, too.

“Deke Adams (defensive line) and Shawn Elliott (offensive line) from South Carolina are coming on Thursday,” said Jozie’s father, Mike Milton. “Deke came down last week, but Shawn wants to see him work too.”

In fact, a commitment to the Gamecocks could be imminent.

“(Jozie) told me he didn’t think it got much better than playing center at South Carolina,” Mike Milton said. “I know he really thinks that with Steve Spurrier over there they will be able to win a national championship in the next five years.

“I know a lot of coaches have told him he’s an NFL center and (Adams) is one of them. He’s actually leaning a little more to playing center now, and South Carolina was the first to offer for that position.”

South Carolina offers Mike and the family some peace of mind as Mike played college ball with Adams at Louisiana-Monroe. It also has some advantages with the family being able to watch Jozie play due to his father’s high-ranking status with the Louisiana National Guard.

“I know Deke real well and I know he would have someone up there that I know,” Mike added. “Another big plus for us as a family is Fort Jackson (Army Base) is four miles from campus so that would be a big plus because we could stay there for cheap and fly in for real good prices.”

Another coach that will make his second visit in the past week to check on Milton is Notre Dame defensive backs coach Kerry Cooks, who recruits Louisiana for the Irish.

“He came down and watched him practice and liked him a lot,” Mike Milton said. “He got his transcripts and took them back for them to evaluate them. He said hopefully he will be coming back with an offer.”

One school that has always been thought of as a potential roadblock to schools outside of Louisiana is LSU. The LSU staff continues to evaluate Milton and hopes to get him to its June camp. As is the case with nearly every major prospect in Louisiana, the Tigers will be a factor.

“They told us to come back to camp and they were going to work him out at center and defensive tackle,” Mike said. “If he goes I think it would probably be June 9.”
