It’s been quite a month for junior college cornerback D.J. Daniel. The 6-foot, 180-pounder entered May with offers from East Carolina, Georgia State, Louisiana and South Alabama.
“It’s pretty exciting, but it’s also a learning experience, being that I’ve never had this before,” Daniel said. “I’ve just got to trust the process, make sure I do everything right and stuff like that.”
South Carolina offered on May 1. SMU, Marshall, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Cincinnati, Tennessee, Florida, Middle Tennessee, Louisville and UCF have since jumped on board.
Gamecocks defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson made the move when he stopped by Georgia Military College to check out spring practice. About 30 minutes after Daniel was finished cleaning up after practice, Robinson made the phone call.
“[Robinson] said what he likes about me, what I would need to work on,” Daniel said. “My length, my physicality to the sport. He likes me in press [coverage]. … He offered me on the phone, but he wanted to make it official when I heard from Coach [Will] Muschamp.
“After [Robinson] offered me that day, Coach Muschamp called me in the morning and officially confirmed the offer. It was nice talking to him, too.”
South Carolina recruiting guest
Daniel, a rising sophomore at Georgia Military who played high school ball at Spalding in Griffin, Ga., will take an unofficial visit to South Carolina June 5-6. One of his former teammates from Georgia Military, defensive tackle Jabari Ellis, signed with the Gamecocks in December. Another, defensive end, Devontae Davis, is committed to sign with the Class of 2019.
“I remember them telling me about their fans, the fan base,” Daniel said. “And the coaching staff, how they’re so supportive.”
An unofficial to Kentucky is set for June 8-9. He’s also looking to schedule an unofficial to Ole Miss.
Daniel hopes to make a commitment before the start of his sophomore season.
“I guess just the environment,” he said, when asked about factors in his decision. “I really don’t know what to expect, since it’s all new to me. Just talk it over with my family and see how it goes.”
In 10 games as a freshman at Georgia Military, Daniel had 26 tackles and 3 interceptions. He’s scheduled to graduate in December.
