On Tuesday afternoon, South Carolina added a commitment from 3-star junior college defensive tackle Dantrell Barkley 6'4" 285lbs.

Arkansas State, Colorado and Colorado State also offered Barkley, who’s originally from A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis, N.C. Now, at Independence (Kan.) Community College, he’s ranked by the 247Sports composite as the No. 15 overall JUCO prospect in the Class of 2018.

Running backs coach Bobby Bentley and defensive line coach Lance Thompson have led South Carolina’s pursuit.

“Just the relationship I have with the coaching staff. I’ve known most of the coaching staff since I’ve been in high school, so it’s been a little over a year, maybe more than that. … I’ve known coach Bentley and coach Thompson for quite some time,” Barkley said. “When I went up there, it just felt like home.”

The Gamecocks hosted him earlier this month for camp, where he was put through an on-field workout with Thompson.

“You always want a coach that’s going to motivate you to do better,” Barkley said. “You want to have some fun, too. you don’t want to just be work, work, work, work. You want to have some fun, too, so (Thompson) seems like a coach that will have fun, but is also serious about winning. He takes his job very seriously.”

At South Carolina, he’ll have three years to play three seasons.

“He’s got good size, good athleticism. He’s got to get a little more physical in the weight room and stuff like that, but he works hard,” Independence coach Jason Brown said. “He’s gotten a lot better. He’s starting to figure it out.”

Brown added, “He’s a good kid, works hard. He’s came a long way since I got him.”

Now, Barkley’s bound for a career playing in the SEC.

“Ultimately, that’s a lot of players’ goal, but I just want to play against the best and prove that I can compete with the best players in the country and show that,” he said. “I feel like I belong.”

Barkley is USC’s first interior defensive lineman commitment for the class. He is scheduled to visit NC State this Saturday but he’s not sure he’ll follow thru with that. He plans to graduate in December and will have three years to play three with the Gamecocks.
