ORANGEBURG, S.C. — During an Independence Day announcement at The Times and Democrat, South Carolina landed a commitment from junior college defensive tackle Jabari Ellis.

JUCO D-tackle Jabari Ellis 6'4" 290lbs, a 2015 graduate of Lake Marion High School (Santee, S.C.), committed to South Carolina over North Carolina State.

The rising sophomore from Georgia Military College was offered by the Gamecocks in February.

“It meant a lot, really, because that was my first offer out of JUCO, knowing that I have a place to go after JUCO,” Ellis said, shortly after the offer. “And, then, it’s South Carolina, and it’s close to home. It really meant a lot.”

Earlier this year, he was on campus to watch spring practice at South Carolina.

“I had a meeting with coach (Will) Muschamp,” Ellis said, after the visit. “He was just telling me – ever since my senior year of high school, that was my first time meeting him and he’s been interested since then – he was just telling me how important it was to become a Gamecock.”

The Gamecocks hosted him again for the spring game and later for Muschamp’s Camp.

“They mainly just talk to me about coming in and doing everything I want as a player, developing my game and hopefully having a career after college, going to the NFL,” Ellis told SEC Country, during an on-site interview at his high school.

According to the 247Sports composite, Ellis (6-2, 280) is listed as the No. 14 overall JUCO prospect in the class of 2018. He’s also ranked as the fourth-best JUCO defensive tackle.
