JUCO DE Dorian Gerald feels needed by Gamecocks

Dorian Gerald update

Junior college defensive end Dorian Gerald has scooped up some pretty significant offers during the month of May. Alabama kick-started the run on last week. LSU, Florida State, North Carolina State and Georgia have since followed.

Gerald was productive during his first season at the College of the Canyons (California), recording 54 tackles and 12 sacks.

“I’ve just been praying hard and trying to keep a level head, because it’s a lot, it’s a lot going on,” Gerald said. “When a lot of coaches are telling you the same things — you’re the best thing they’ve ever seen. … I’m trying to keep a level head. I’ve been praying.

“I’ve been talking with my family about everything, so I’ve been good (with) my family and coaches. It’s crazy, but I’ve been trying to act pretty calm about it and try not to think about it so much.”

Arizona State, Louisville, South Carolina, Tennessee and Washington State have also offered the rising sophomore. After his semester ends on May 31, Gerald will be back home for summer break. It’s around that time when he’ll narrow down his list of suitors.

South Carolina appears to be in good position to make the cut. It certainly helps that Gerald (6-foot-3, 255 pounds) played at West Florence (S.C.) High School before moving on to Columbia’s Palmetto Prep Academy in 2015.

The Gamecocks will “most definitely” host him for a visit while he’s home on break. Others are angling to get him on campus.

“Louisville brought up to me about doing an official visit while I’m home this summer,” Gerald said. “I don’t know if I’m going to do it. I might save it for a game. I don’t know, but they brought it up to me. Do you want to come on an official visit?

“Florida State wants me to visit. LSU wants me to visit, all of them want me to visit.”

Just how many he makes is still up in the air.

“I think it’s going to be a lot for the summer. I’ll probably visit a few places, but I don’t think I’m going to have time for everywhere,” Gerald said.

South Carolina has three coaches working him: Muschamp, defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson and defensive line coach Lance Thompson.

“They need me. They want me. That’s clear,” Gerald said, “And that’s what I like about Coach Muschamp and Coach Thompson. They said they need me. They want me there at South Carolina and that’s what I like. They’re honest. And that’s all I ask for from all coaches is honesty.”
