JUCO tackle Anthony Whigan recaps official visit

Anthony Whigan, the No. 6-ranked junior college prospect in the country, just wrapped up his official visit with the Gamecocks. Is he on the verge of joining the 2019 South Carolina recruiting class?
Not quite. The 6-foot-5, 290-pound tackle from Lackawanna (Pa.) Community College still has a couple of other official visits to take. But this much is certain about his first one: South Carolina set the bar high.
“It was good. My mom, dad and I, we enjoyed ourselves,” Whigan said “It was a really good time. I had fun and I learned a lot about South Carolina.”
The family arrived Friday afternoon and stuck around Columbia until Sunday morning before they flew back home to Maryland.
“As soon as we got in, they gave us a tour of the facility and all that stuff, then they had me do a little photo shoot and all that,” Whigan said. “I really liked everything.”
Saturday was highlighted by a trip to Coach Will Muschamp’s house.
“That was a lot of fun,” Whigan said. “We were on the water, the lake – [riding] jet skis, fishing. I got to meet with my academic advisor and stuff. I got to meet with the sports management professor. I was informed about a lot of stuff.”
Whigan, who’s ranked as the No. 2 JUCO tackle in the Class of 2019, would provide South Carolina with a veteran presence next season. The Gamecocks are losing several potential options at the right tackle position, including Zack Bailey, Blake Camper and Malik Young. Starting left tackle Dennis Daley is also set to exhaust his eligibility in 2018.
“The main thing [Muschamp] kept saying is, ‘Us getting you is a need. We need somebody at that tackle position next year, that right tackle position.’ I’m a person that they need,” Whigan said.
Offensive line coach Eric Wolford offered a similar message.
“He was [also] telling me that he can help me develop as a player and a young man, he can help me get to the next level, the NFL,” Whigan said.
Next weekend, he’ll take an official visit to Louisville. That will be it for the summer, though he does plan to take an official to Penn State in the fall.
Whigan plans to be ready for a commitment by October. He graduates from Lackawanna in December.
