The departure of coach James Franklin from Vanderbilt to Penn State has made for a hectic final few weeks before National Signing day for former Vanderbilt commitment Kameron Uter (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy).
Kameron Uter 6-foot-4, 205-pound three-star wide receiver, who is also a standout pitcher and plans to play both sports at the next level, heard from Gamecocks receivers coach Steve Spurrier Jr. on Facebook over the weekend. But whether Uter visits South Carolina -- and other programs who have reached out, for that matter -- will depend on who reaches out and offers the opportunity to play both sports first.
"He just asked me if I had any interest in South Carolina, and I was like, 'Yeah, I'm very interested,' and that was pretty much it from there," Uter said of the conversation. "I know the football coach at my school (Kevin Johnson), he played at South Carolina, and he's been talking to coach (Lorenzo) Ward a little bit but that's pretty much it."
Uter, who is ranked the No. 63 wide receiver with a 89 rating from 247Sports, committed to Vanderbilt in October but decommitted from the Commodores on Saturday.
"They had Alshon Jeffery and I feel like I kind of model my game after him, because he's a bigger receiver and he's not the fastest but he's still got some quickness and elusiveness and speed on him," Uter said of the Gamecocks' program. "I kind of model my game after him. They were calling me the next Alshon, so I was like 'Okay, okay,' I feel like if I went to South Carolina I could be the next big receiver they need just to throw the ball up to. I feel like I could do that, because I know they always had big receivers like that, so I know they could use a big body if they wanted one."
Uter is actually more familiar with the South Carolina baseball program and says that was one of the first programs to contact him his junior year.
"I think it was two years ago they made it to the College World Series but they lost and the two years before that they won," Uter said. "I've always been interested in South Carolina for baseball. It's always good to see how many people go pro from the program. They have a great program. Ray Tanner, he was the head coach, and I think now he's the Athletic Director and he always did a great job there."
Uter says he's still considering Vanderbilt. He's got offers from Wake Forest, Kentucky, Indiana and Arkansas, but says the Razorbacks have filled up. Uter says a Clemson baseball coach and a Virginia baseball coach have been in touch with him this week and he's waiting to see if those respective football programs want him.
