Keisean Nixon’s official visit; looking at the Gamecocks DB attrition
Nov. 21, 2016
JUCO cornerback Keisean Nixon was one of three official visitors at South Carolina during the weekend.
“It was a big visit,” he said. “I got to see a lot. It was a productive visit.”
The cornerback from Arizona Western College was joined by his mother, whose birthday — Dec. 17 — has been tabbed as Nixon’s announcement date.
“She said it was different, so we’ve got to go back and look at it,” Nixon said, when asked what she thought about South Carolina.
“We’ve got some other trips to go to. We haven’t set anything up yet, but we’ve got some other stuff to do, so we’ll figure it out.”
Iowa State and Colorado State have already hosted Nixon for official visits. Oregon and Mississippi State could also have him on campus.
Muschamp’s pitch was about what one would expect for a junior college prospect.
“Coming in and playing right now, early playing time,” Nixon said. “I can come in and ball.”
The Gamecocks see Nixon as a versatile piece, one that could play cornerback, safety and nickel.
“It’s a good team, good pieces. They’ve got some areas they need help at and the secondary is somewhere that I can help with that,” Nixon said.
The No. 59 overall-ranked junior college prospect is listed as the seventh-best cornerback.
This season, Nixon had 32 tackles, 12 pass breakups, 6 interceptions and 5 touchdowns. Two of his touchdowns were kickoff returns.
“(Muschamp) said I would be kick returning, for sure,” he said.
Nixon, who’s originally from Compton, Calif., was one of two junior college defensive backs who made official visits to South Carolina. Former Clemson cornerback Kaleb Chalmers was the other.
The Gamecocks 2017 signing class already has six defensive backs committed, but 4-star targets Hamsah Nasirildeen and Jamyest Williams are still being pursued by some other sizable programs.
South Carolina will lose three scholarship defensive backs from the current roster after this season ends: Chaz Elder, Jordan Diggs and Jasper Sasser. Don’t forget about cornerback Rico McWilliams, who left before the season began.
Plus, JaMarcus King, Chris Lammons and D.J. Smith are all juniors right now. After 2017, there will have been at least seven defensive back departures over the course of two years. It makes sense for Muschamp to go heavy at the position in the 2017 signing class.
